About This Pipe

A third-generation artisan with a background in professional design, Nanna Ivarsson is a force to be reckoned with in the pipe-making world. The daughter of Lars Ivarsson and granddaughter of Sixten Ivarsson — who is frequently hailed as the "grandfather of modern pipe making" — Nanna has combined her background in design with tutelage from her forebears to cultivate an unparalleled eye for design and an unmatched level of craftsmanship. Her portfolio is replete with stunning smoking instruments such as this Long Shank bent Dublin, and she has more than earned her exalted status among collectors over her decades-long career.

This offering is distinctly Danish, and even more distinctly "Nanna" — the latter especially evident through this piece's long-shanked format. Nanna is known to offer long-shanked interpretations of classic shapes that demonstrate excellent compositional balance despite their seemingly juxtaposed proportions. This bent Dublin is no exception, its squat, forward-urging bowl balancing gracefully at the fore of a protracted, elegantly upturned shank. The bowl's forward cant and the shank's sweeping profile imbue the composition with a dynamic sense of movement, and the latter also promotes a comfortable smoking posture. The concise, high-kicking stem also aids in this, and its stylized, near-half-saddle shaping adds another element of dynamism to the composition.

Stunning grain abounds throughout this piece, with churning maelstroms of birdseye swirling around the bowl's thick rim, and tight tendrils of flame grain climbing up the walls. More birdseye dances along the top and underside of the shank, while a kiss of plateau adds a subtle yet eye-catching pop of craggy texture across the shank's face. A rich, smooth, chestnut finish emphasizes every fine detail of the briar's gorgeous grain, and an inlaid brass ring adds an elegant dose of flash at the junction. Virtually flawless in both form and finish, and crafted by one of the most venerated pipe makers of our time, this offering is sure to secure a coveted spot in any smoker's collection.
