About This Pipe
Formerly known as the American Pipe Making Exposition, our annual Global Pipe Making Exposition features contributions from some of the world's foremost artisans, all united around a central theme. One of the most exciting events of the year for carvers, smokers, and enthusiasts of briar alike, the Global Exposition acts not only as a showcase for the immense talent of these artisans, but a focus for the boundless creativity that these masters of the art possess. For 2025, the theme of our Expo is "In Memoriam," celebrating the life and works of artisans who have passed on, yet whose impact on the craft and those around them is utterly undeniable.
Crafted by Ryan Alden, this beautiful Ambassador is the American carver's tribute to Gert Holbek, a renowned Danish artisan who collaborated with the famed atelier Pipe-Dan. Holbek got his start in pipe making in 1953 with Poul Rasmussen, and after a year of restoring pipes and learning the tricks of the trade, he opened his own workshop and sold his pipes through Pipe-Dan. His pipes were so expertly made that they became the standard for Pipe-Dan, and his tall-bowled creations influenced the workshop's Shape-Reformed series, which consisted of pieces marked by dramatic verticality that was intended to offer a drier, cooler, and more even smoke. Despite spending nearly 50 years in the pipe business and his unmistakable style, Holbek isn't the most well-known among the Danish greats, making his selection as Alden's tribute all the more special.
As for the tribute piece itself, it perfectly encapsulates the Danish artisan's inimitable style. It bears the signature, Chimney-like proportions of Holbek's (and, consequently, Pipe-Dan's) work, with a towering, gracefully tapered bowl poised at the fore of a soaring shank-and-stem arrangement. The bowl boasts an exceptionally high waistline, even for one so tall. It's subtly demarcated by a slight, outward bulge, which is followed by an equally subtle taper up to the rim. Below the waistline, the bowl tapers again, terminating in a narrow, rounded heel that blends seamlessly with the shank. In turn, said shank blends seamlessly with the lengthy, arcing stem, whose posture and proportions of a relaxed, comfortable smoking posture in hand. Overall, the piece is replete with fluid momentum and soft yet lively curves — shaping cues found in all of Holbek's pieces, no matter the shape. While Alden tends to incorporate a variety of natural accent materials into his pieces, he has forgone that tendency with this piece, leaving it void of any accents or decorations, as Holbek did with his pipes. The stummel wears a rich auburn stain and a soft yet detailed sandblast that draws out the briar's beautiful grain for both the fingertips and the eyes to admire. Alden's thoughtful admiration for Holbek shines through in this piece, and it beautifully commemorates the extraordinary artisan and his contributions to Danish pipe making.
