Many of Savinelli's Autograph pipes are large, as the handmade line allows talented makers to bring the pipes of their dreams to life even when they deviate significantly from the marque's standard shaping conventions. This bent Dublin offers the kind of robust dimensions that make me think Italians dream big, yet it stays within striking range of six inches in length. A pleasing balance between generous dimensions, which it certainly has, and unwieldy mass, which it avoids, this is simply a big, bold pipe with plenty of neoclassic charm. The bowl cants forward with an eager flare to a rim of plateau, with the fore subtly pointed like the prow of an intrepid sailing vessel. Flame grain leaps up all around the bowl and softly flaring shank, giving the piece a certain upward momentum. It looks light in hand, and the effect is amplified by the light stain and smooth finish the dress the grain with timeless class.
