About This Pipe

The grandson of legendary pipe makers Poul Rasmussen and Anne Julie, Johannes 'Suhr' Rasmussen has taken up the pipe-making mantle, producing stunning pieces since 2016 — although he carved his first pipe at the tender age of eight. In addition to having two legendary pipe makers as grandparents, Suhr was also mentored by Tom Eltang, and over the years he has cultivated a singular style that bespeaks his intrinsic connection to carving masterful creations. Teeming with organic flourishes and harmonious shaping, this Tulip certainly stands as a testament to the artisan's exceptional craftsmanship.

As a whole, the bowl has an energetic, forward-urging posture. The rim also displays a forward-urging momentum of its own, swooping forward and reaching up into the air to lend the rim a concave curvature. The aft side of the bowl is much more plump, and with the narrow heel, it almost lends the form an Acorn-esque appearance. A trim shank emerges from the low-set transition, adorned with two knuckles of bamboo for a highly organic and visually rhythmic flair. The shoulders of the saddle stem continue the bamboo's visual rhythm, establishing a sense of unity throughout the composition. The stummel wears a rich, warm contrast stain, highlighting the briar's exceptional grain and emphasizing the piece's masterful shaping.
