About This Pipe
Most pipes made of morta are sandblasted to take advantage of the remarkably geometric grain patterns inherent in the material. For this stubby Bulldog, though, Werner Mummert has chosen a smooth surface in a dark, woodsy stain, for a sublime, silky smooth texture in hand. A very angular piece, Mummert has kept the curves to a minimum, opting for planes, sharp angles, and flat panels instead, except for the bowl, which is rounded, of course, and the rim, which is gently domed with two crisp beadlines circling the outside edge. The grain of the morta is carried on in the stem, which is striated in rose, brown, black, and cream and has been oriented with the grain of the wood. The mouthpiece scoops top and bottom into the saddle configuration, maintaining the width of the shank all the way to the lip button. Compact and lightweight, it's intuitively a pocket pipe, though it is obvious that it will win fights above its weight class.
