G. L. Pease - JackKnife Plug 2oz
A New Part of My Rotation!
I was stunned by how good this tobacco is. Not that Mr. Pease has a habit of making inferior blends, but my God - how many times can this guy knock it out of the park?! Admittedly, he's come up with a few that just weren't for me, but this one? Oh ho ho... This one is right up my alley! Firstly, as the name says; it is a plug of tobacco. Ive had some plugs that I could just break apart with my hands and rub them out. That is not the case here. You will literally need a jack knife to slice off your fill. If you've never done this and think it sounds like a chore, I assure you - the end result is WELL worth the preparation! I personally get an almost light leather smell with that oh so familiar (and favorite of mine!) smoky DFK. It's a smell that makes me very comfortable and relaxed. It doesn't hit you in the face or make you blink your eyes and shake your head in bewilderment. Instead, it entices you to close your eyes, inhale deeply and picture damp streets lined with flickering gaslights that break through a heavy fog. But what of the taste? Admittedly, THIS is where I shook my head in disbelief. That Virginia absolutely SHINES through but in a very welcomed way. It doesn't take away from the DFK but it almost tries to upstage it in a sibling rivalry sort of way. It's balanced, but just barely, and that type of back and forth fighting between the 2 comes across as something very special and I can't get enough of it. It's almost like the Bunkers from "All in the Family". Edith had a heart of God and Archie was the rough-around-the-edges every-man that rarely said the right thing, but always wound up DOING the right thing. It's not a perfect marriage, but its one that will last forever.
G. L. Pease - Key Largo 2oz
Just finished my first tin and...
WOW! This has a wonderful flavor that I want to call "complex", but, I feel that that is too pretentious for this tobacco. This is way more of a laid back tobacco that more or less embodies the word "relax". The latakia hit me out of the tin and I was worried I had just wasted my money because I genuinely don't like a lot of latakia. From start to finish though, it's a terrific smoke and the cigar leaf, in my opinion, is the star of the show. I wouldn't recommend it for a newcomer, but if you like relaxing with a flavor profile that is a little more adventurous, you can't go wrong with Key Largo!
Cornell & Diehl - Habana Daydream 2oz
Cool nights in Habana
Very easily one of my all-time favorites. Everything is blended so unbelievably well; the amounts are perfect, the cut is perfect, the way it smokes is perfect... CnD knocked it out of the park with this one! As someone who isnt much of a fan of Latakia, this one does it well. It doesnt overpower everything else and acts like a great backup singer - you know its there, you appreciate its there, if it wasnt there you'd miss it, but youre glad its not center stage. The cigar leaf tastes and smells a tad more than just a "spoonfull" (also kicks a bit more in the nicotine department) but that is part of what I love about it. One of my favorite morning smokes!
Toscano - Allegro 2oz
Came for the DFK, left because of the Lat
I'll be the first to admit I'm very picky about Latakia blends. As someone else pointed out, Latakia is starting to be put into everything and reminds me of the cranberry craze in the early 2000s where cranberry flavors started popping up in places I'd rather they hadn't. This does not have a *hint* of Latakia. It is a very obvious amount that really ruins what could have been a fantastic blend. The DFK is actually quite tasty in this but it is monstrously overshadowed by the Latakia. I dont normally give up on a tin, but this one made me throw in the towel halfway through. I even tried some of my own blends such as adding a bit of cigar leaf to one small offering and even adding in some CnD vanilla to another. I played with humidity levels for all of them and in the end, all my efforts only made it SLIGHTLY more tolerable. A reputable company, no doubt about that; but this one just isnt for me.
G. L. Pease - Penny Farthing 2oz
The standard for my pipe tobaccos
This is the tobacco that I use to judge all other pipe tobaccos. Is it worse than PF, as good as PF, or better than PF (not many get that distinction)? I absolutely love everything about this tobacco. I understand that shag cut isn't for everyone, but a full bowl lasts about an hour for me and is the PERFECT companion to my morning coffee. If you smoke it slow enough, you get a wonderful aftertaste of dark chocolate. Like I said, it compliments my coffee perfectly. Do yourself a favor and try it.

10 Sleeper Blends From Cornell & Diehl- ► So far my favorite C&D blend that NO ONE seems to talk about is Habana Daydream. It has the perfect amount of cigar for a strong nicotine kick and tastes like a warm afternoon by the water.
