Dark Fired Pleasure
October 13, 2017
Product: G. L. Pease JackKnife Plug 2oz
This blend of fantastic Dark-Fired Kentucky & Virginia flavors fills my senses to the brim with notes of robust savory tobaccos. The tin note is admittedly a bit strange; it smells exactly like barbecued meat, but once sliced and decanted, a wonderfu... Read More
l aroma of tobacco replaces it. There is no topping, but the casing seems to bring-out the richness of flavor in the component tobaccos, enhancing both flavor and fragrance. Nicotine-wise, JackKnife has a noticeable kick—medium-high strength at about 7 out of 10. Recently I've had this every day after dinner, and it always leaves me with a delightful feeling of a warm & sleepy relaxation. The initial charring lights give way to an intense cigar-like flavor, only to be replaced with this wonderfully rich and surprisingly smooth flavor of DFK and Virginias swirling around one another. The flavors and fragrances of this plug are excellent; the retro-hale is simply blissful. I would recommend thin slices, and personally I cut it and rub it into an almost shag-type fashion, but that's just me. To conclude, Jackknife is most certainly worth a shot if you're looking for a stout and savory evening smoke. I find it to be especially enjoyable in warmer weather. Read Less

be disappointed in either. The tin note is very rich and enticing. I am in agreement with Dr Brandon's assessment that the scent is quite BBQ like. Upon smoking, you will be rewarded with a sweet, flavorful taste where the DFKs and VA compliment each other perfectly. The room note is pleasant. As noted, there is a bit of a nic kick in this little gem but it is very manageable. I'm always looking for great DFK blends and this is one of them. I really love this blend and will be keeping this one in the rotation for a long time. Read Less

Smoke this when you have time to savor the bold taste , and to get the mellow nose and tones from the smoke, smooth enough to be an all day smoke, but i enjoy at night, IMO lady Niccy is pretty strong on this one which I enjoy(similar nic to burley flake 1 &2 imo), but keep that in mind, this blend is for the avid pipe smoker and i love it! Product: G. L. Pease JackKnife Plug 2oz
Presentation: A nice slab of dark Kentucky, red virginias and bright virginias. The dark fired burley and red Virginia surrounds the thinner layer of bright Virginia, sort of like a grilled cheese sandwich. From my experience, the plug is not uniform... Read More
in shape every time- width, height or thickness, but varies from tin to tin. The weight stays the same though. Not as dense as some plugs (3P's, Dans Salty Dog), but still manages to stay together after numerous slicing sessions.
Palate: A tin note of semi-sweet BBQ sauce, ketchup and a pig roast. The dark fired burleys along with the red Virginia are the main components. It's spicy, salty and reminds me of charred ribs. The burley adds the flavor that one might attribute to the aroma of a meat smoker. Its rich, heavy and leaves a savory taste in your mouth. The red Virginias smooth out and help with the mustering of the dark fired burley. The bright Virginia adds a sweet essence to the blend, but only for a short while. This is a stout blend.
Performance: With plugs, you can cut this anyway you want. Some may want to cut thick slices and rub it out halfway, cube cut it, or in my preference, cut the plug as thin as possible into shag ribbons. I find that when cutting and rubbing it into a fine shag, I get lovely thick smoky clouds and all of the flavor at once, but it tends to burn quick. I haven't tried it any other way as I love the flavor it gave me with this method. A pretty strong nicotine hit. Not an all day smoke but I could see this as a morning blend to perk you up and then as an evening blend.
Conclusion: I was hesitant to buy this blend based on what I heard about dark fired burleys being strong. I gathered my courage and went ahead and purchased a tin with just over 4 years of age on it and was glad I did. It has become one of my favorite blends that I buy in the 8oz tins. If you want a rich blend, this is it. It isn't as strong as MacBaren Bold Kentucky, but it offers a far better range flavors for some of the dark fired burley blends on the market today. Benefits greatly, in my opinion, from some age. Read Less

ing it and the blend was way too robust for me to enjoy at the time. So, it sat in a jar for a while. I'll admit, the bar dried out quite a bit from me fandangling it so much that every time I attempted to slice it up, the thing just fell apart into what would appear to be a pile of dried up autumn leaves. I thought, surely it's unsmokable now. And it sat in a jar for even longer.
Well, this winter I thought, what the hell, I'll take another cracking at it. After all, my tastes had developed and I have been enjoying many Kentucky based blends as of late. So I stuffed my cob with a wad of the crushed up baccy leaves and lo-and-behold, the star spangled banner began to play and an array of fireworks and fighter jets raced across the blue sky, uncle sam appeared as a snow-man and there I sat, at last, a new man. on looks promising to me. A gentle rub and a few moment later, my lighter toastes the tobacco and a charming, burley and virginia flavour washes over my tongue. It’s a strong flavour that compliments my coffee. It’s burning cool, strong and steady, providing a tickle to the back of my throat which tells me I won’t be wanting for nicotine in this blend. It isn’t as potent a flavour as Gaslight, but like Gaslight, this is a bowl to enjoy slow, for I suspect it could carry quite the bite if one were to smoke too quickly. There is a very slight nuance to this overwhelmingly burley flavour that keeps me guessing. There is also a subtle sweetness that distinguishes itself. The flavour doesn’t vary much as my bowl progresses, which I find remarkable, though I do think that the strength of the burley flavour does mellow a little toward the halfway mark. Overall, this is a strong and steady blend that is not complex, but of exceptional quality. With my last puffs, I knock the fine grey ash and look forward to the next day that starts with a bowl of this. Read Less

ut accidentally got it too thick. Very slow burn but no bite although there was some harshness when smoked fast. I set it aside to try again and earlier this month I decided to slice the whole plug and rub everything out before putting back into the tin. It took me a couple of hours of slicing and I used scissors to cut pieces thinner as needed. Then I put it back in the tin a waited a few weeks before smoking. While still a LONG smoke, I managed to smoke the whole bowl and was very very pleased. Don't know what this stuff is like when new but aged 5 years it is fantastic.
