Savinelli: 140th Anniversary 100g Pipe Tobacco

Product Number: 003-401-0011

Commemorating 140 years of pipe-making tradition, Savinelli's 140th Anniversary blend is an elegant mixture of Red and Bright Virginias, spiced with Orientals and choice dark-fired cigar leaf from Italy, and infused with subtle notes of citrus and wildflowers for a unique and satisfying smoke.

The special dark-fired used in this blend is a staple in Italian cigar production, and is all grown and double-fermented on a singular farm in the Tuscan Tiber Valley region of Italy — a location recognized for its history and tradition of tobacco cultivation dating back to the 17th century.

JassonWB sums it up perfectly. Though bear in mind that the cigar note many allude to is very, very light and is rather delicate and loamy in character. The cigar note isn't an assertive flavor such that one may encounter with Billy Budd or any of the Toscano mixtures. The wildflower is a top note which is nothing like Gawith's Lakeland topping; it's also very delicate, nuanced and gives the elusion of sweetness yet isn't a sweet flavor. I believe it's a wildflower infused liqueur... possibly Rosolio? Smoke it slow for best flavor. 140 is well crafted. You can tell a great deal of thought, creativity and testing went into this. 140 is a culmination of knowledge, skill and creativity which pushes the boundaries of tobacco blending. This is a deliberately nuanced and contemplative mixture. There's a lot going on in this. Zero tongue-bite with a lingering tangy and floral finish....Read More

This blend has a wonderful floral essence. Easy burning this comes off as a twisted Sun Bear with dark fired instead of honey as the defining characteristic. Wonderful room note. Sip easy and be rewarded with a good time.

This blend came in a tallish tin and ready to smoke. Sadly the experience was not that pleasant. I always approach pipe tobacco blends with joyful enthusiasm. I have quite a number of personal favs across most categories so why do I keep trying new ones? Hope lives eternal. Notwithstanding the mostly 4 star reviews on 140 so far, this is an odd blend. Sort of a Virginia but not. Some slight topping but not enough to be an Aromatic. Some bits of Orientals to get to very mild spiciness. What throws everything off is (what I believe) to be a high concentration of cigar leaf. I used to smoke cigars. Have some laying around in a humidor. Just don’t really want “that” in pipe tobacco. To be sure the cigar leaf adds tons of structure to this blend. So what do we have? Even with the toppings, even with the Virginias, this can only loosely be called a Virginia. So we say “Virginia Based” when I would have said this is “cigar leaf based” with a bit of Virginia, a bit of Oriental, and a bit of topping. Might well be useful in a new blending at home or with a press with an Aromatic. Maybe....Read More

2022 Edition dated 122922: Tin 1020 of 2800 has notes of sweet tang fruit and flowers. Tobacco is a Ribbon cut of orangish tan, reddish brown and a little dark brown. Moisture content is good, a few pipe smokers may want to dry this a bit. Burns moderate with a few relights. The strength is medium and nic is medium. Flavoring is mild to medium, with notes of Wildflowers and Citrus, both are noticeable in the first 1/4, then the drop to background players. Taste is medium to full and mostly consistent, with notes of floral, lemon grass, very woody, mild cigar, spices, tart and tangy citrus, sweet fruit, savory, rich dirt, fermented sour vegetation, leathery, spicy, mild musty herbal hay, a sweet bread background note, and a peppery retro. Virginias are leading with Italian Dark-Fired Cigar, Flavoring and Oriental/Turkish supporting. Room note is pleasant to tolerable, and aftertaste is great....Read More

This is a sweet "aromatic" blend, with a finely shredded cut. I wanted to try a virginia blend with Italian cigar leaf. But this isn't it. I taste the sweet casing, which is overdone.
Good quality and preparation as always, but if I had a sample of this before buying, I would never buy this.

Not that Great

Product: Savinelli 140th Anniversary 100g
I read the rave reviews and ordered it. I was not impressed. It has no Virginia sweetness and really no redeeming tastes other than the fact that it is not extremely harsh. I did notice the cigar leaf, which I am not looking for in a pipe tobacco. I have managed to use up 3/4 of the tin over several months by sneaking it into my blends. Will not order again....Read More

Product: Savinelli 140th Anniversary 100g
Being primarily a non aromatic smoker, I do like to have few aros on hand for hot weather and the holidays. This is one of my new favorites. It's a quality blend and the citrus and wildflower infusion is subtle, not overpowering. The excellent tobaccos shine through. I will be purchasing more of this....Read More
Better with age

Product: Savinelli 140th Anniversary 100g
As a gift, I was excited for this... with my new Savinelli pipe. Smoking it straight away, it was quite bitter and a little too tangy. I definitely got the wildflower essence, which isn't my favorite, and too much of the cigar leaf. I smoked probably 3 bowls before I shuffled it away for awhile, about a month in the tin. Then I put it in a jar and left it another month plus. One day I pouched a bit to take to work. I lit a bowl for the drive home and was amazed at the difference. Smoother, more balanced, less tang and bite but with more plain citrus flavor, and a still-noticeable but way better touch of that cigar leaf. Bottom line, age it awhile and let the flavors meld and mellow. (Aaaand I tried to 4 star this, but the page isn't letting me)...Read More
Bready, nutty!!

Product: Savinelli 140th Anniversary 100g
I have cellared this blend well over 2 years. It starts to emit smell of bakery, and mild nutty flavor. Very pleasant, fair amount of Nicotine, despite it says it contains Dark Fired Kentucky.
