Rattray's: Red Lion 100g Pipe Tobacco

I'm not the best at describing tobacco notes, but this Red Lion continues to grow on me with each session. I easily suffer from tongue bite,but if I let this sit out for about an hour, I have no problem with it. I'm currently using a bent Dublin Clement pipe from St. Claude (estate purchase from this great site)that has a large chamber, and Red Lion behaves excellent in it. It tastes delicious from the start, and slowly gets better as it burns. I tend to smoke heavy if I'm enjoying the flavor( tannen,green tea,herbs at first, then the Cavendish shows up)With this blend,I can puff away without getting stung. For me personally, each smoke is more enjoyable than the last. It's worth a try for an easy, anytime day smoke. When I first smoked this, it didn't blow me away. Over the course of a year, however, I find myself regularly returning to it. Personally, I don't like exaggerated spices and unnatural scents, but Red Lion has turned my understanding of tobacco on its head. It is elegant and harmonious, with a light nutty toasted aroma, charming but natural

I admit it I am a Latakia light weight. All the standard English blends were too much for me. Red Lion is definitely an English blend but the Latakia is toned down to a back note swirling in with the Basma. Perfect after dinner smoke for my taste.

I could smoke this all day. I am looking forward to trying more Rattray's blends. So far they're all excellent.

I'm smoking Red Lion as I write this, and it seems to me that this is an excellent blend for the English lover who doesn't want to be challenged. And that's not a put-down or criticism. It's well balanced, with a slightly spicy background. Not overly laden with Latakia (though I love Latakia) I could easily see myself smoking bowl after bowl of this, not tiring of the flavor for it's medium strength, yet flavorful taste.
