About This Pipe Tobacco

Founded in 1841, Drucquer & Sons was a famed London tobacco shop that relocated to Berkeley, California, in 1928. The shop was more than just a tobacconist though; it was a community. It was where some of the greatest tobacco-blenders in recent memory — like Charl Ehwa of McClelland and Gregory Pease of G.L. Pease — first plunged their hands into flagrant tobacco. The historic shop may be gone, but its rich history and brand of pipe tobaccos continues, reformulated from their original recipes by Gregory Pease (and made by Cornell & Diehl) for the modern smoker.

The fullest of Drucquer & Sons' pipe tobaccos, Levant Mixture is a rich, luxurious, and aptly named Balkan blend, comprising generous portions of Latakia and Orientals with Red Virginias for a subtle sweetness. It's a blend of eminent distinction.

Old School Balkan Character Done Right

I’ve been smoking English and Balkan mixtures for many years, and Drucquer & Sons Levant Mixture is exactly the kind of blend that reminds me why I love this style of tobacco. The smoky, earthy Latakia is beautifully balanced by the dry, woody, slightly sour and incense like Orientals, with the Virginias adding just enough natural sweetness underneath. For me, the Orientals are what really make Levant shine, and I love how the different components move back and forth throughout the bowl. There’s a wonderful old school character here that takes me back to some of the great English and Balkan mixtures I enjoyed years ago. It’s rich and complex without being overwhelming, stays interesting from the first light to the bottom of the bowl, and really rewards a slow cadence. Firstly, this is a tobacco that doesn’t show off its ingredients. This blend works together as a whole that shows you a rounded, Smokey, incense, thick taste. I have never had a tobacco that relaxed me as deeply as this one. It’s the best tobacco I’ve ever had by far. I got a recommendation to try this from Lukus at smokingpipes. This stuff is the real deal. Smokes cool and smooth. For the first few puffs of the bowl there is an unmistakable funky custard flavor. Not real sure how to describe it. Maybe a fermented custard. Super unique and very satisfying. Got my tin the other day and I smoked two bowls back to back. I don't normly do that. Can see myself smoking another two bowls this evening. It definitely has its place with other peas English blends. More mild than gaslight or quiet nights, but the smoke is still thick as those are with a creamy texture. Just got into smoking maybe 6 months ago and I’ve only had maybe 15-20 different English blends, this isn’t like any other one I’ve had. First off, The smoke damn near has viscosity. It’s thick, pillowy, creamy, and dare I say sensual? The taste is divine. I have a hard time picking out a lot of nuance and instead consistently taste the blend as a whole. It’s the weirdest part about the blend. Most English I’ve had I can isolate a lot of the tobaccos. Not this one. It’s a fully combined smoke. You get all the nuances of each tobacco balled up into one glorious note that hangs and lingers. The retrohale is something else too. Almost like motor oil flowers. I love it. I feel like a lot of English blends fist fight over which tobacco should be driving the bus, meanwhile the Levant cruises alongside the bus in a Bentley, waves, and vrooms off into the sunset. I did a review of Blairgowrie and while it was an excellent smoke, it was a little too balanced and though pleasurable, didn’t really call out to me. It was pleasant enough though to look for other blends and I happened across this one. This one is outstanding. This one is full of flavor and has a little bit of everything in abundance. It’s got some sweetness to it, plenty of smokiness, tartness and fruity/floral background notes. It’s got a wonderful smoky creaminess on the retrohale. A full flavored smoke I could enjoy this all day and it’s in my top 3 daily smokes now. I purchased a few tins and look forward to seeing how it ages. This is the perfect tobacco for those NOT seeking a mild or mellow smoke but wanting a full out flavor fest in every bowl. This is one of the few blends that if I had nothing else available I could smoke this happily and be content....Read More
