I have been smoking this blend on and off for around 10 years. At first I wasn't experienced enough to appreciate it so I stuck it in the cellar for a while. After a while I tried it again and was very impressed so I kept smoking it. I find Samarra t... Read More
o be very smooth and complex and is what I'd consider a medium strength blend. It has just the perfect amount of sweetness from the va's that balances out nicely with the fragrant latakia and the nice flavor of exotic oriental spice that is finished off with just a tiny dash of perique. All the tobaccos in this blend work together harmoniously, never overpowering one another, yet somehow letting their individual presence be noticed and appreciated while simultaneously melding and creating layers of flavor. I smoke it slow and still get plenty of volume of smoke which I like. I am now smoking an 8oz tin that is about 8 years old and it is just sublime. The older I get and the more experience I have the more I appreciate the detailed complexity this tobacco offers. I only wish I had cellared more. Glad it is still available and hope it will continue to be in the future. I'll certainly be buying a couple more tins to cellar and smoke when I can. Read Less

This blend doesn't get enough play on forums and review sites. I like most Pease blends and this one is my absolute favorite, if I had to pick only one.

I purchased this based on a review on this site. I didn't have any expectations here other than it being mild or medium in body and nicotine. I really enjoy this English by Mr. Pease. Age when smoked is very fresh so I'm looking forward to seein... Read More
g how it develops with age. The tin description really nails it, as expected. It is quite smooth for the first half of the bowl, and the virginia and orientals are key players here, with the cyprian latakia lending it's sweet and smoky flavor. What happens when you reach the halfway point is why I really love this blend. The flavor and body deepen and intensify, with the perique starting to transform the flavor into a complex medley of tastes and aromas. At once, and with every puff it is mildly sweet, deliciously smoky, slightly but increasingly spicy, and certainly zesty. By the time I'm nearing the end I find myself puffing relentlessly, but it refuses to get hot. Samarra is very well done, and if you like a well balanced medium english with incredible natural tobacco flavors, exceptional smoothness, and a complex twist near the end you will definitely enjoy this blend. Samarra is a GREAT english blend. Don´t believe me, try it!!!! I can say with no doubts this one of the most fantastic english blends i´ve tried so far. It has something different; i guess the distinction comes from the virginias, that are sweet, s... Read More
ilky and smooth; orientals playing a fantastic game with the latakia and some spicy from the perique that is really awesome. I also think this is a very undervaluated tobacco and deserves an special place in the cellar of every pipe smoker. Highly recommended!!! Read Less

This is a really good medium English/Balkan and I order it from time to time. I'm not much of a latakia hound, but when I want latakia, this is one that I reach for a lot of the time. Mr. Pease has a masterpiece on his hands with this one; it's cream... Read More
y virginias, sweet and sour orientals, smoky latakia, with a little kick from the perique, it will satisfy anyone's craving for a good blend. It's not a latakia powerhouse, but it has the perfect amount when I want it. Nothing in this blend sticks out and each tobacco, while can be seperately detected, work within one another nicely. I do recommend this highly, but it's not one that I would smoke everyday, though it definitely could be, if Balkans are your preference Read Less

My Favorite Daily Blend

Product: G. L. Pease Samarra 2oz
Sweet, cool, and silky- Samarra is my favorite daily blend and the retrohale is truly pleasant. I consider this to be a sweeter English blend, as the Virginias are a clear note that balances well with latakia. I’m typically not a perique lover, but t... Read More

ted. Taste is medium and mostly consistent, with notes of earth, bread, smoked wood, tart lemon grass, floral, musty dry herbs, mild raisins, mildly spicy, mild sweet hay background note, and a mild peppery retro. Virginia is leading with Latakia and the Oriental/Turkish supporting. Perique is bringing up the rear. Room note is pleasant to tolerable, and aftertaste is great. Read Less

This is a really nice English mixture with some Turkish in there to fill it out a bit. It grew on me as I worked through the tin and it is definitely a well-balanced, repeatable smoke. Ribbon-cut that loads easily and packs well. The latakia is notic... Read More

This is excellent if you like Oriental forward blends, personality I don’t. The room note is wonderful and tastes is good but has that bitter sweetness that I’m not fond of.
