Winter on the farm with a flask in my pocket

Product: Cornell & Diehl Strathspey 2oz
It is close to midnight and early in lambing season. I walk among the flock of heavily pregnant ewes on a hill looking for signs that lambing season is starting. Snow is in the air, swirling around me. The lights on our East Tennessee farmhouse shine out a welcome glow below me. My sheep dog is by my side as I take a pull on my flask of Islay. I pause for a bit, look around, then strike a match. This is Strathspey....Read More

A Very Richly Flavored Scotch Blend
November 08, 2024
Product: Cornell & Diehl Strathspey 2oz
Smoked in a 2006 Comoy's Christmas billiard. I think it was too large a chamber for such a rich blend. When they say, "a wee dram", they mean a small chamber because this stuff is loaded with scotch whiskey. The tin note is a boozy, briny, smoky latakia. Moisture is perfect. The beginning is predominately a peaty - bready character and is supported by all else. Love this! The scotch is assertive and tasty as its peaty, flinty, tanginess compliments the sweetness from the cavendish. Cornell and Diehl has mastered the art of marrying tobacco with liquor and there is no equal among the tobacco houses today. Well done, VERY well done! Halfway through and it's getting stronger. The tangy scotch is still very present and the latakia and oriental are coming through full-bore; spice and buttery herbal notes are emerging and predominate. It changes its complexity 3/4 of the way through and has a much, much richer - smoky, briny, flinty, herbal, and caramelized sweetness. The sun cured, latakia and scotch dominate, and are stronger than ever. I wouldn't consider this an all-day blend - too rich, but a very nice one with which to wind down the day. I recommend a small chamber - don't go too big as this is VERY richly flavored. Consider the Brulor, Ropp or even a Rossi. Those are traditional French style classics with small chambers. Too fast and it'll overheat pretty easy. I got ambitious because it was so tasty and then ended up sipping the rest of the way, which coaxed out even more flavor. The finish lingers with a tongue-tingling heather and briny tanginess of scotch. Not a clean finish, but if you like scotch you'll be pleased. I wouldn't dare cellar this as I'm afraid it'll lose that wonderful scotch note. Full flavor, medium body, light in strength. This is so light on nicotine at maybe 1.5 out of 5. I don't agree with the strength level of 3....Read More

Well as a staunch and strict aromatic smoker, I was always terrified of the English blends due to their strength, smell and power. But I was gifted a tin of this from a friend and absolutely loved it!! I was so happy because I have been looking for a crossover blend and believe I have found it. I am also a big single malt scotch fan and after reading the description 'Pair it with your favorite single malt and savor its rich, peaty notes — perfect for a winding down on a cold winter's night.' I just couldn't resist venturing out to try it. Boyyyyy they was not lying when they said this pairs perfectly with a single malt. I tried this tobacco in my new 5 star general corn cob pipe and enjoyed Johnny walker blue label (blended) scotch and man I was just so impressed. I am so happy I got the courage to continue the search for a good English blend. The way I would describe this blend is 'you can drink a good scotch and smoke it at the same time' in fact since buying this tin, I have barely touched the aromatics. To all my fellow aromatic smokers who are still looking for a way to get into English, I would 100% recommend giving this a try, to all my scotch drinking pipe smokers i would 200% advise picking up a tin of this....Read More
The true Scotch quality

There is more than a wee dram of scotch added, but unlike most other liquored blends I've tried, C & D has the mastery to marry fine whiskey with an excellent tobacco product. A unique sweetness to go along with the Latakia. Definetly not a blend for all.
One toke over the line...

I rank Peterson's Nightcap as one of my all time favorites, and I love Latakia blends. I had high hopes for Strathspey after reading a review that indicated it was similar to NightCap. While I don't dislike Strathspey (far from it) I did find it to be a bit less refined than NightCap, somehow "rougher" in flavor profile. I wonder if perhaps the NightCap comparison set expectations incorrectly. I will re-examine this after it ages a little to see if it settles down a bit, and will re-review....Read More
