About This Pipe Tobacco

The main characteristics of Bob's Chocolate Flake come from the 8% Latakia included in the blend and the smooth chocolate aroma. Brazilian, Zimbabwe, and Malawi Virginia leaf make up 82% of the blend providing a mellow/medium smoke cooled with the addition of 8% Malawi sun cured and 2% Malawi Burley. The Latakia cools but also adds strength and aroma. The cocoa casings and chocolate top flavors are rounded off with vanilla and other flavors providing sweet notes in this very unique and popular blend from Gawith, Hoggarth & Co.

Cool Smoking & Indulgent

Product: Gawith Hoggarth & Co. Bob's Chocolate Flake Bulk
First of all, for the Philistines that think they're dunking on this blend by giving it one star because it has Lakeland essence -- of course it has Lakeland essence, it is GH&C. Let's get one thing strait: one star is for either a blend that is obviously comprised of lugs / grade C leaf only, or Captain Black Grape. Whether Lakeland is your cup of grog or not, GH&C leaf choice is unimpeachable. Don't believe me? Let it sit in a mason jar untouched for five years and come back to flakes absolutely coated in sugar crystals. Giving this blend one star is like ripping a flier for guitar lessons off a telephone pole and shouting "I DON'T WANT GUITAR LESSONS!". That being said, I suppose everyone is entitled to their opinions, however malformed or misguided they may be. At least this isn't as bad as the people who review bomb Sun Bear because they don't understand how supply and demand works. BCF is mechanically a great smoke, staying cool and burning slowly with proper pacing. Let it dry for 30-45 minutes before you pack it. It's a smoke best served as dessert. A slowly retrohale is the key to taking in all the flavors and aromas of this blend. I knocked off half a star for GH&C being a little inconsistent with the amount of chocolate topping they apply from batch to batch....Read More
Utterly Unique

Product: Gawith Hoggarth & Co. Bob's Chocolate Flake Bulk
One of the most unique tobaccos currently being produced. An aromatic? Sure, sort of: but not an American-style one and also far less scented than G&H's other aromatic brands like Ennerdale. The natural scent that is applied here is not candy-like chocolate, but more like dark coco powder with 8% smoky latakia for contrast. The Malawi sun cured leaf also adds a sweet and rich cigar-like quality to produce an exquisitely tasty flake in the Old World tradition. There is a reason this tobacco is a cult favorite for discriminating pipe smokers everywhere....Read More
What Bob, less like Bob and more like Ziggy

The photo is not representative of what you receive in bulk orders. I ordered Bob's Flake but received Bob's Dreads wearing cheap perfume. For now I placed it in two glass jars named Bob and Ziggy Marley. For my $100 it should resemble the picture, pressed, aged more than a day and unique not cured on a clothesline. $50? maybe and that is pressing it. Smokingpipes has been great for me but on this one I don't know what they or I are smoking. I smoked a couple of dreads, not what it should be like....Read More
English / Balkan Blend - Not Aromatic
August 28, 2026
Product: Gawith Hoggarth & Co. Bob's Chocolate Flake 50g
I didn't get any chocolate or cocoa from either the tin note or the smoke, but it is a nice English blend with Latakia. Maybe more like a Balkan since it does have a little sweetness from the Virginia tobacco, but I definitely don't consider this a "aromatic" by any definition. GH typically doesn't add a lot of flavoring in the topping, but there is virtually none here. If you're looking for chocolate or cocoa, I suggest MacBaren's London Blend (discontinued but a lot of milk chocolate notes) or something like Samuel Gawith's Chocolate Flake, which also has a noticeable milk chocolate flavor while smoking. Even Two Friends' English Chocolate blend has some chocolate and cocoa notes. But this one has virtually none and that makes it kind of boring and misleading on the description. There are better Latakia English or Balkan blends with smokey campfire notes, and there are also better blends with milk chocolate or dark cocoa notes. This one fails to lead in both categories, and I'm glad I didn't cellar up on it. I've tried it fresh and with 10 years of age. Neither impressed me based on the online hype or general expectation from GH - a top-tier blending house. Given all that, it does burn well with no bite and is a decent Latakia based blend....Read More
Not as the name implies

I’d like to start by saying this isn’t a bad blend at all and I will buy more because it is very unique but…. Given the name I was expecting a much more coco vanilla flavor, it’s very very very slight and not what I was expecting.
