A rich, nutty smoke
April 11, 2025
Product: Cornell & Diehl Cross-Eyed Cricket 2oz
Full disclosure, I purchased this tin because the label looked amusing. The tobacco it contained was moist, it was dark colored ribbons with some light colored ribbons mixed. The smell is very woody and Earthy, and the taste was very nutty! Recommend!

I'm a fairly new pipe smoker had my share of aromatics and burnt tongue and I'm starting to really like English blends and dark fired Kentucky blends. I do enjoy Latakia and the first blend that really made me go eureka you know when the bells and whistles go off in your head and wow this is dam good is cross eyed cricket oh my God I love this blend it's in my rotation for sure. I'm definitely stocking up on it....Read More

Started my pipe journey like many, with some gloopy aromatics. A few bowls, and a few scorched tongues later, I retreated and gave my first English blend a shot...glad I did. It saved me from putting my pipe down forever. So after getting to know unadulterated tobacco a bit better, as well as a little pipe training, from Virginia forward blends...I wanted to give a aromatics another chance... picked up 2 oz of Cricket on a suggestion from a buddy....Wow! Very nice. This has become a favorite in my rotation. The topping just works amazingly with this blend, while there is still enough natural tobacco character there to enjoy. Also the leaf behaves so well, burning easy with little to no relights. Fantastic light aromatic, give this one a shot....Read More
Still can't decide, Aromatic or English?

Product: Cornell & Diehl Cross-Eyed Cricket 2oz
Let's face it, one of the best things of pipe smoking is exploring different offering from the world's tobacconists. There are only a few tobaccos but all are influenced by growing regions, seasons, weather, and handling among other factors. After that the skill of those who actually do the blending comes into play along with us...what do we like. I'm primarily an aro smoker, roughly 60% of the time, the rest of the time whatever suits my mood up to and including pure latikia or perique. That doesn't stop me from exploring and with the expansion of STG and the loss of MacBaren or Sutliff favorites, I decided that I'd expand my knowledge of C&D blends. And now to this blend...the statement of "English or aromatic, you decide" caught my eye and the use of unsweetened Cavendish with the latikia and perique was intriguing to say the least. No tobacco overwhelms any other and the casing is very light so more of the tobacco flavor comes through. I'm pretty sure this will be one of my all-time favorites though I'm not sure I can consider it in my aromatic rotation or the English part, but I won't get caught without a supply of this like I did when McClellend went away. This is a blend for everyone. Though not a factor, the tin art is pretty cool. On edit: After 5 decades of pipe smoking, I've never designated one as my "desert island" smoke...until now. This is the one...it has become my all day every day smoke...I can't get enough of this....Read More

I’ve been in the game for a year now and have found many blends I like and dislike. I like aromatics, I enjoy some Latikia, and Perique is starting to grow on me. I’ve had Cross-Eyed Cricket on my radar for a long time but felt it may be too hard on the Latakia compared to maybe Da Vinci or Black Duck but this is an extremely pleasant surprise!
The Latakia is there but not right up in your face. My first lighting gave me flashbacks of Frog Morton for some reason, and for this I had high hopes it could be an everyday day blend for me. I’ve smoked 3 bowls so far and it just keeps getting better. Very balanced, not overly sweet. In fact I would go as far to say this IS more on the English side vs. an aromatic if I had to categorize.
It’s a beautiful blend that suits my tastes perfectly! I highly recommend Cross-Eyed Cricket and this moves to the top of my list. I’m willing to bet this will be my daily summer smoke!
It is a little wet with the rum topping so a little dry time is needed imo and the retro hale is very satisfying. 10/10!

Cut Like Silk

Product: Cornell & Diehl Cross-Eyed Cricket 2oz
First smoke notes…
It is cut like silk. Wonderful to the touch. Opened the tin to a very smoky flavor, but after letting it air a wonderful aroma of premium tobacco. Took the first bowl in my trusted falcon and…wonderful smooth inhale. No flavorings, no gimmicks, no goop, just quality tobaccos, m
ixed to perfection and cut like to silky perfection. Smooth flavorful smoke, cool, not unlike the presence of an old friend. Wouldn’t quite call it aromatic, but certainly not heavy. Stays lit better than any tobacco I have ever smoked. Cool, easy smoke. Very highly recommended....Read More

Product: Cornell & Diehl Cross-Eyed Cricket 2oz
I stuck it in a jar after my first bowl. 2 years later I paid said jar a visit. My one regret is only having the one jar. Sipping a light aromatic in a slurry of a decadent English is like the dog who finally catches his squirrel and grins. Lastly, this burns so so well, this point alone is an experience unto itself....Read More
A New Favorite

Product: Cornell & Diehl Cross-Eyed Cricket 2oz
I smoke a variety of tobaccos and I have been pleased with this purchase. Cross-Eyed Cricket is really complex and busy with different smells and flavors. But there isn't any fighting. The blend works well together, and it's an incredibly mild smoke. The aroma is pleasing and maybe even a little inviting. I am very selective about what makes my "favorite" list but this one makes the list. I'd recommend to new or experienced smokers....Read More
