I had to smoke about five bowls of this and experiment with packing before I truly enjoyed this tobacco. At first it struck me as a very average smoke, but it is really much more. Like realizing our cosmic insignificance in the face of untold ancient... Read More
horrors, I was one evening just overcome with how good this can be.
1. Pack it fairly loose.
2. Use a pipe that you only smoke Balkan or balkan-like English blends out of, if possible
3. Smoke several bowls before passing judgment.
Early in the bowl is a very entrancing and deep mix of incense aromas and what I call 'old books'. This swirls and plays on the palate for at least the first third of the bowl. Once it fades, I find I get mostly Latakia smokiness and some sweet Cavendish with the Virginia seeming to give body and round out these flavors, but I am pretty bad at picking out notes of Virginia tobaccos.
I'm just a novice, but that's my best description. Try this and fall under the entrancing extra-dimensional spell of a truly supernatural smoke. Read Less

Ok, I was swayed by the marketing of the HP Lovecraft themed blends. I bought them all no matter how they turned out. This was the first to come in and I have to say, this is actually an amazing blend.

It is a well crafted cocktail of great tobaccos, with amazing deep flavors. Burns in the right, cool way, left no moisture and produces a very dry smoke. Big high five to the blenders!
A wonderful evening smoke.

This one is a pretty solid hitter for me. Spicy, with scents reminiscent of ritual smoke and clove. Right out the tin it smokes pretty well, but leave it for about a week or so and it gets better. A month and you’ll love it. The perique hits just rig... Read More

At first glance this tobacco stands out. Like other entries in this series, the blend is unique. I am reminded of how Dreams of Kadath is technically a Virginia blend but it is also so exceptionally distinctive. This blend follows that same pattern b... Read More
ut in a completely different direction. Where Dreams of Kadath is bold and intriguing, Awakened Elder is elusive and complex. For example, being an English blend, I expected a heavier dose of Latakia (I typically love blends with generous amounts of Latakia) but Awakened Elder is very subtle in this regard. The tin note is closer to a Virginia blend than an English. That’s not a bad thing just unexpected. Very evenly blended. The smoke is light and pleasant. Just enough latakia to sate my expectations of an English blend but all around calmer than sat a Maltese Falcon or Mississippi Mud. It kind of reminds me of a more laid back Plum Pudding. Overall, I find the blend to be very satisfying and I will be keeping a stock of this blend on hand. Although, I think the name is misleading. I don’t think of the chaos and mind breaking reality of the elder gods but rather the calm relief of waking from a bad dream. Read Less

Love the Cthulhu theme! The flavor is spicy with hints of cedar, the Latakia isn't overbearing, and as a regular aromatic smoker I enjoyed this English blend.

and the experience never changed. If there was something hinting within the flavor, then I would have aged it for a bit to see if something came out, but just considering it tasted of nothing notable, I wouldn't even bother. The plus to the experience is that it doesn't smoke too hot and is pleasant nonetheless so long as you don't want to taste anything notable. Read Less

tle more present, building up some peppery spice and mouth feel in the second half of the bowl. Latakia is clearly present, bringing some campfire smokiness to the mixture. Virginias are likewise very present, giving some sweetness and rich earthiness. The two most obvious ingredients are the burleys and Orientals; you get the rich nuttiness and a hint of cocoa from the burleys, and some rich spice flavors (mainly cloves and cinnamon) from the Katsuri. This blend is one that you'll want to sit back and pick apart to truly appreciate, and it's well-worth your time. Read Less

and springy, and after ten minutes it's perfect for my normal smoke. In my opinion this facilitates better aging also. Moving along... The tin aroma has a delicious Latakia aroma that is far from overpowering, and a noticeable spice overlaying the foundation of Burley and Virginia. No one component fully overpowers the next, and this is a common theme through the smoke also. Awakened Elder contains just enough Latakia to be present with every puff, and this is especially true as you progress through your smoke. The spiciness (assuming this is the katsuri), is also present throughout, infusing the smoke with a unique flavor that evolves into a spiciness on the tongue reminiscent of Perique near the bottom, though arguably much softer on the palate. The Virginias and Burley are also key players during the first half of the bowl, and with all these flavors going on I consider AE complex for an English, if you have the time to relax and pick all of the flavors out. The Burley is also noticeable near the end of the bowl, as burleys typically are, and you may get a hint of that Burley bitterness amidst the spice and Latakia. It's worth mentioning that Awakened Elder is soft on the tongue, and we'll balanced, perhaps thanks to the lower percentage of Latakia, and I think it could be smoked all day if you're a seasoned smoker. Nicotine is a touch above medium, but I need to smoke a few more bowls before I can commit to that ranking. That being said, I have a very high tolerance to nicotine and I was left satisfied. I'm looking forward to seeing how AE ages, and I suspect it won't take very long to reach peak age. Perhaps it will become a 4.5 or 5 star blend for me. Read Less
