Hans "Former" Nielsen began carving pipes in 1956 and has since become a legend of Danish pipe artistry with a worldwide following. In addition to his exquisite pipes, he's released his own line of pipe tobaccos — several of the blends fittingly named after briar's grain patterns.

A traditional, naturally sweet flake tobacco prepared with only the finest grade of Virginia leaf with a pinch of Perique, Former's Cross Grain Flake is aged to perfection in order to bring out the best in this cool smoking, magnificent flake.

A fuller flavored surprise

Upon opening the tin, the tin note aroma had a pronounced Virginia bread-like sweetness, along with the characteristic subtle fragrance of yeasty fermentation and stone fruit of well-aged Perique. The aroma is enticing and definitely gets the juices flowing. The tobacco was slightly drier than my usual experience with flakes. I intended to roll them out but found that they crumpled easily without effort. This blend proved to be a fuller-flavored surprise. Smoking a VaPer that was reminiscent of a Burley mixture in its richness was entirely unexpected. It burned a bit hot at first but a slower cadence rectified that quickly. It burns well with no annoying moisture and I experienced no bite at all. The room note is tolerable, with a darkly sweet fresh bread aroma. This is a superb blend which should age well. It was a fresh tin but had the mellow characteristics of a slightly aged tobacco. Definitely worth checking out if you're a Virginia or VaPer aficionado. My favorite vaper by far. I'm generally more of a burley and English smoker but this stuff is amazing. Smells like baked goods in the tin and it smokes magnificently. Sweet and spicy. Perfection.

This is the sweeter blend and not as spicy ,similar bready flavor with a smoother spice than the straight grain give it a try if you’re into VaPr blends I don’t think you’ll be disappointed

Excellent. A real surprise. We must now try other tobaccos of the former. This is a high quality virginia with a touch of perique. Perique is strictly background, but, nevertheless, it is. This is the best you can find these days. Virginias have more character for one thing.
This is a softer version of Straight Grain flakes from the same range as Former. But it is a very smooth and highly recommended blend....Read More

I bought this a from SP a few years ago because of the touted similarity to Capstan. Perique is my kryptonite but I bought it anyway. I'm glad I did. Yes the Perique is there but it has its place in the blend and is not annoyingly forward. There is an added sweetness to the VAs but is very well balanced. It burns well out of the tin and has predictable flake priorities. It can get a little warm if you push it but should be manageable for VA fans. I'm a FVF smoker and CGF has a permanent spot in my rotation. Kudos to the blender. Tasty stuff. I would however give it a little time in the cellar before opening, as I did mine. I think all VAs shouldn't be opened for 6 months after tinning. Kinda like brewing cider. Time mellows it and rounds out the flavor....Read More

upon opening the tin i first thought "ugh?! orlik golden sliced?" ... a pretty similar smell ... hmm, matured - i guess so, coz the flakes were kinda loose and broke apart whithout rubbing them out when i filled my test pipe (vauen admiral, with 9mm filter) ... puff puff, aaah, really nice VA with a subtle sweetness on the tongue and a slight touch of hay ... not too mild, straight tobacco without any BS ... very good for a bargain price -- i'll surely order it again (when back in stock lol)....Read More
