About This Pipe Tobacco

Robert Lewis' Wingfield pipe tobacco was named after Welsh inventor and British Army officer Walter Clopton Wingfield, who in the 1800s was one of the pioneers of lawn tennis. A bust depicting him can still be seen at the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum. Walter Wingfield was said to be a long-time customer of the London-based Robert Lewis shop. Robert Lewis tobaccos have been around since the late 18th century with the namesake shop being one of the oldest in the world.

In Robert Lewis' Wingfield Mixture, fine Virginias dominate the flavor profile, though technically Black Cavendish and Latakia are listed as components. Those complementary tobaccos, though, are used sparingly and lend Wingfield Mixture a smooth texture and cool aspect without noticeably affecting the overall flavor.

Bought a tin to try because my wife is a Wingfield. Quality leaf blend. I think it's thee casing that gives it the flavor many liken to latakia being in the blend, but other than the profile offered here, it's not supposed to have latakia in it. Doesn't hit the mark for my palate. But, does hit the mark for many a piper. Worth trying a tin to find out yourself....Read More

Tin note of tart dark fruit and smoky. Tobacco is a ribbon orange and yellow with a few black pieces. Moisture content is great. Burns slow with a few relights. The strength is medium and nic is mild. No flavoring detected. Taste is mild to medium and very consistent, with notes of tangy ripe fruit, sugar, floral, bread, spices, savory, wood, rich earth, sweet hay, tart lemon, herbal grassy, slightly acidic, mildly fermented, orange peel, a mildly sour zesty citrus background note, and a peppery retro. Virginia is leading with Cavendish and Latakia supporting in name only. Room note is pleasant to tolerable, and aftertaste is great....Read More

Product: Robert Lewis Wingfield Mixture 50g
This was my very first Virginia and as a relatively new pipe smoker who has mostly smoked aromatics, I found this to be pretty darn good! Just a nice earthy, slightly sweet, mild, pleasant aroma! It reminds me of that classic nostalgic pipe smoke smell that I loved as a kid! Not something I’d smoke all the time, it’s a little middle of the road for me, but it’s still a good tobacco!...Read More

A straight Virginia as it should be. Hints of citrus, naturally sweet, mild and bold. Very enjoyable
