10 Blends for the Spring Season

It's that wonderful time of the year where the weather starts to mellow and nature begins to bloom — that's right, it's spring! For the dedicated pipe smoker, warmer weather also means more comfortable outdoor smoking in the yard or on your patio. With that in mind, it's time for another edition of 10 blends we'd recommend for the spring season!
Revised for 2026 from an article published on March 21, 2024.
G.L. Pease: Horizons Flake
Horizons by G.L. Pease is the third entry in the master blender's Zeitgeist Collection, portraying a contemporary theme inspired by the jet-age retrofuturism of the late 1940s and 1950s in the tin's stunning artwork. This English blend is medium-bodied and approachable — fitting for all-day smoking this spring!
Available in: 2oz
"Another masterclass in English tobacco blending by none other than THE PEASE. This is the kind of English you pull out when you want rich, savory BBQ smoke with the notes you expect from an English without feeling overwhelmed by it. I also liked how smooth and creamy it was for me. I normally get hammered with dry mouth by Orientals and this didn't do that for me. They are there but they didn't mess with my palate. It's like Quiet Nights' younger sibling. This blend really is that good." - HammerandPipe, 5-star review at Smokingpipes
- Components: Virginia, Latakia, Orientals
- Family: English
- Cut: Flake
Cornell & Diehl: Sunday Picnic
Who doesn't love a picnic outside, whether at the park, on the beach, or right in your own yard? C&D's Sunday Picnic captures the spirit of this warm-weather activity through a delicious and memorable Virginia flake, combining Golden Virginias with Perique and Turkish Izmir.
"Wow, what a wonderful surprise. I just love this blend. After getting a single tin, I finished it quickly and got 2 more 8oz cans. It's a beautiful flake with a great all-around flavor and can be an all-day smoke for sure. A must try for Va lovers." - [email protected], 5-star review at Smokingpipes
- Components: Virginia, Perique, Orientals
- Family: Virginia
- Cut: Flake
Peterson: Elizabethan Mixture
For Virginia/Perique lovers, Elizabethan Mixture by Peterson is an excellent option this spring, featuring pressed, darkened Virginias with a dose of Perique, resulting in a tangy character and a bit of peppery spice.
Available in: 50g
"Tin note smells like fig newtons. Not overpowering like many Virginias I've had before. The aroma is pleasant and subtle. The tobacco itself is damp and needs drying. It's very soft and velvety to the touch. Smokes great. One of the smoothest Virginia blends I've ever had. Didn't taste any spice from the Perique. I'd buy this again for sure." - Brett E., 5-star review at Smokingpipes
- Components: Virginia, Perique
- Family: Virginia
- Cut: Ribbon
Ashton: Rainy Day
As lovely as spring can be, it also notoriously brings a lot of rain. After all, the saying goes that April showers bring May flowers. It features a blend of Virginia and Burley combined with Black Cavendish, all aged in whiskey barrels for precisely one month. Delight in the aroma of tropical fruit and hickory nuts to comfort you on those rainy days.

This English blend highlights Oriental tobaccos through flue-cured Virginias, Latakia, and Turkish leaf, resulting in smooth, natural flavors that can accompany you as you cruise on the waves this spring.

"One of my favorites. This blend is another fine example of the countless exceptional blends from Samuel Gawith. This blend is exactly what it's supposed to be: a lovely Oriental-forward English. I consider this an any day and any time smoke. I find it to be a very soft English, a good entry point for folks new to English blends. And an excellent smoke for the discerning pipe smoker." - Peculiar_Piper, 5-star review at Smokingpipes

Cornell & Diehl: Bayou Morning Flake
For the Virginia/Perique enthusiast, C&D's Bayou Morning Flake is a top choice! It combines Old Belt Red Virginias with 25% Perique, all pressed before being sliced into flakes.
"This has everything I'm looking for as a first smoke of the day. As a former cigarette smoker and vaper that switched to pipes, this has the nicotine I want with my morning coffee. The Virginia and Perique complement each other so well in this blend, it has to be the perfect ratio. I need to stock up on 8oz tins since starting the day without BMF is like starting the day without a cup of joe." - Kodi P., 5-star review at Smokingpipes
- Components: Virginia, Perique
- Family: Virginia
- Cut: Flake
Orlik: Golden Sliced
A spring list wouldn't be complete without Orlik's Golden Sliced, the iconic Va/Per featuring a flake-cut blend of Virginias with a bit of Perique. It's a favorite among many for its natural flavor and touch of sweet citrus.
"This tobacco is absolutely perfect. Orlik is like an old, dear friend or slipping into some comfy clothes. I prefer the smaller tin, which is probably mental but it just tastes better to me this way. This tobacco has saved angry pipes who didn't like anything, and broken in some new pipes excellently. A standard; a classic. So terrific when your pipe acquires a taste for it after a few bowls. I cannot state enough how beloved Orlik Golden Sliced is. It is as perfect of a flake as one can hope for. Cornell & Diehl: Watchman's Reach
Spring brings new life and fresh blooms into the world. The newest release from Cornell & Diehl, the Summit series, features four traditional plug tobaccos inspired by the vast American West. Watchman's Reach is a dependable, even-tempered mixture of whole-leaf Bright and Lemon flue-cured Virginias, accented by flavors of lively citrus, fresh hay, and warm baked goods. This springtime-friendly blend shines with natural sweetness, much like blooming honeysuckle this season.
Available in: 2oz
"Watchman's Reach, this is a very relaxing smoke and honest, bright, tangy, grassy, citrus zests, evenly sweet Bright and Lemon Va leaf! A more straight forward, consistent flavor yet still very enjoyable for a calming, smooth, and cool all-day smoke, in my opinion! The toasted bready, slightly creamy layer of malty notes shines through every puff, the retrohale & French inhale wonderfully! Sit back, relax, and enjoy the all-natural Virginia goodness. A worthy blend indeed! Check it out!!" - Pakcik Dee, 5-star review at Smokingpipes

Fantastic read and excellent breakdown! Need to check out that smooth sailing
Sunday Picnic is my favorite and I'm always reluctant to try new blend. Love the breakdown, really gives great insight and make it easier to find something new.

New list for next order.
Kudos!
What is a French inhale? (From the description of watchman's reach).
Letting the smoke roll out of your mouth and inhaling it through your nose afterwards.
