For the ones who master pipesmoking

oasted in a coffee roaster like drum heated by a wood fire. The other 10 to 15 % is a foreign sweet non-burley tobacco added to improve the smoking qualities.
Since the production is totally manual with machines of the 1930's every batch has a little different composition making every batch unique. It is very dry and is not meant to be rehydrated, so keep it dry and smoke it dry. When you master pipe smoking you will get a wonderful smoke, but you will have to tamp it very strongly otherwise is burns to quick and to hot. When smoked slowly and well tamped you will discover a pleasant flavorful natural smoke with a rich variety of different perfumes.
A challenge for confirmed pipe smokers, compensated by a very special smoking reward. Read Less

Rustic Earthiness Defined

Product: Tabac De La Semois La Brumeuse 3.5oz
Vincent Manil’s La Brumeuse Pure Semois is one of the most unusual and flavorful pipe tobaccos I have ever had the pleasure of smoking. The flavor is rich and utterly unique; more akin to a fine cigar in its full-bodied earthiness. This earthiness is... Read More
at times reminiscent of tobaccos containing appreciable quantities of fire-cured Malawi Burley such as Gawith Hoggarth’s Dark Flake or Dark Birdseye. Wafting through this rustic earthiness are subtle herbal and floral notes that are difficult to identify as specific flavors. Their presence comes and goes to varying degree throughout the smoke.
Never harsh or biting, it is best smoked slowly where these herbal notes are at their peak. Semois is a strong tobacco and offers a potent nicotine kick – further reason for smoking slowly. The tobacco comes as a medium ribbon cut that is much drier than most pipe tobacco blends. This isn’t a fault but intentional; this tobacco is best smoked dry and firmly packed. The “tin” aroma is also unique with barnyard, hay and floral notes.
Semois tobacco is a unique variety specific to the Ardennes Valley of Belgium where it has been grown for generations. Thought to be a descendent of Burley, Semois tobacco was a major crop in the Ardennes and in great demand throughout Europe during the1920’s and 30’s until the cigarette wiped out demand. Vincent Manil is one of a handful of growers who thankfully remain dedicated to the leaf.
Much like fine wine or cognac, Semois’ exceptional flavor is a product of the inimitable terroir found in the Ardennes and the misty, foggy climate along the Semois river (the brand name La Brumeuse means “the misty one”). This is tobacco at its purest and contains no casing, top dressing or humectant. After drying and aging for several years the tobacco is briefly toasted, cut and packaged entirely by Vincent and his wife in a large stone cottage that also serves as a museum and the couple’s home.
Here we have a true rustic tobacco in this age of corporate mass production and over-processing that I find refreshing indeed and a terrific smoking experience. A big “thank you” should go to The Pipe Guys and Smokingpipes for making this wonderful tobacco available for all of us to enjoy. Thanks guys! Read Less

own faster than I’m used to from other blends I’ve tried and I’ve found that just blowing a bit of moisture back into the packed bowl before lighting actually does help a bit despite the warnings, but I wouldn’t recommend trying to rehydrate the entire block at all. It has a very unique scent in the package and in the before before lighting- dry, hay-like with a slightly acrid, ammonia-line hint. Now I don’t mean to detract from this blend with that matter adjective but it is present. It smokes wonderfully right out of the block . The room note is a combination of straw, hay, and frankly of a gentle variety of marijuana! My wife said it smelled like pot right away! You get those flavors right away on the first inhale. Then other nice summery tobacco notes come through. It’s a clean and pleasant smoke that I keep coming back to. If I work my way through this block I can see myself getting more. I’ve not had any other blends quite like this one and I’ve tried a fairly expansive number and variety of blends- both aromatic and non-aromatic- over my many years of pipe smoking. There are other very specific tasting notes to be experienced in this blend but I recommend that any one who reads this actual review of a tobacco try it for themselves. I don’t think you will be disappointed. Pack it gently, not too densely but not too lightly, give it a charing light, then ramp it slightly and it should stay lit nicely throughout your smoke. This is a very nice blend. Read Less

r, or one that has a light wrapper. Smoking it, i took longer on my walk just to wrap my head around it. Initially it has a very tabacco taste, almost fruit flavor, almost herbal. Around half it became very much like a black tea with a spot of cream. Latter almost down to a third it gets peppery, like black and green peppercorns with some spiciness. I smoked this in a meerschaum , but while the bowl got hot, there was no tongue bite even while clenching nearly the entire time and using the breathe method, (didn't use a filter or keystones as is my usual). It went like a champ, I tamped it down pretty tight, and bowl was near full, it burned completely down in about 15 minutes ( I smoke bit fast I concede). It is to be noted that some blends, like those with Latakia can be a bit much in warmer weather, but in 92 degrees Fahrenheit, it was almost refreshing. I am writing this approaching half an hour later than when i tried it and still am sorting through my thoughts. In short it is very unique, the cigar / tea with cream/ pepper notes make it interesting but not overpowering. Strength for me is more in flavor than punch, initially the blend more in your face and then mellows out. Even if you don't particularly like burley, or stronger blends, at least try this once. It is one of those singular unique blends that are worth a gander. Read Less

ence. This tobacco, dry as it is, should be packed tight. When smoked it should be smoked slowly - sips and kisses . And it should be tamped down hard while smoking. The packing and tamping are counter intuitive , but will yield a smoke that tastes of all kinds of things. Toasted oats and marshmallows, herbal or floral, a twang of pine now and then when you draw harder - a little like Retsina - not for everyone but I like it. I'm looking forward to exploring this and perhaps the reserve cut as well.
Just in closing, technique with this tobacco is everything. Pack tight, tamp hard, and sip and kiss. Big rewards. Read Less

sters, for without that piece some years back, many on my shores wouldn’t know of Sammy Hagar’s doppelgänger and his often hard-to-find blends showcasing the Belgian varietal burley leaf, Semois.
Don’t let the box note deter you. And it does come packaged in the form of a paper brick, and it does smell like musty barnyard hay. Pack these long, dry ribbons (that more resemble mahogany wood shavings than tobacco) on the tight side, or tamp frequently. They’ll burn swiftly.
Scores of reviewers have attempted to describe this unique, earthy flavor, and the descriptions are widely varied. Here’s mine: that pure untopped Semois leaf comes out tasting like mixed nuts (not peanuts, however) with just the slightest trace of Camembert or Roquefort cheese. Intuition tells me most pipers will either really fancy or really dislike this blend. But I sense most pipe tobacco connoisseurs will love it and at least value the first smoking session with this blend. The experience is unmatched: puffing a hard-to-obtain blend from an uncommon burley leaf, farmed, harvested, dried and prepared all by one person.
If you’re a burley aficionado and if this passes your test, you might want to save this blend for a Friday or Saturday night, or a weekend, or when your spirits are feeling low. I break out my four Tabac Manil blends only when I want my smoking session to be a special one. I used to do the same with Cornell & Diehl’s short-lived knockout, Sun Bear, before it became unobtainable. 5.0 stars. Read Less

a slight catch in the throat, much like dark fired.
Tin note, it smells like tobacco. Just plain, dry tobacco. Like dry leaves. This is definitely a very "pure" tobacco and has many qualities to it.
The smoke reminds me very much of smoking straight blending orientals. Different and good in it's own way.
This leaf is very "earthy" in flavor, with ever so slight hints of an herbal quality - again, much like straight orientals.
To my palate - it's quite like a cigar in many respects. Room note, again, much like a cigar.
Initially it's just tobacco, an earthy cigar. As the bowl hits the half way point the flavors meld. The herbal notes come out more. And it mellows down quite a bit and sweetens just a tad near the bottom half.
I cannot overstate the dryness of this tobacco - it took me aback. Strangely enough not only did it stay cool the entire bowl, but when lighting you could notice the oils in the leaf coming out - I figured any oils had long since dried out, but no they're still there. At my normal smoking cadence, which is probably too prodigious, it stayed lit, with only one re-lite at the 1/2 point, cool and dry. Only the slightest burley bite, negligible.
Would this be an all day blend for me? No. Will I keep it on hand? Absolutely! After a day at work, having a bowl of this with a nice cup of coffee, well, it's quite relaxing. Very nice nicotine hit, it's not boring, but it's not a flavor bomb either.
Though I said not an "everyday" smoke for me. Strangely enough, when the bowl is done, though I feel really satisfied, I feel myself craving another bowl of it.
