This is VA forward, in taste, regardless of the percentages...

I am not a huge VA fan...but GH&Co - VA blends are growing on me. More so than any VA I have tried to date; in my first year of piping. So, because of this, you may want to pay more attention to reviews from VA lovers. But I gave this a 4.5★ ...for now; I do always *Update* when deserved. It is a bit moist, so dry it some....and maybe even some more. This does deliver the "citrus" (seemingly grapefruit-like mostly) throughout the bowl when it has moisture in it. I recommend you dry one pinch to the crispiness of a Tabac de la Semois (if familiar with it). So that you can see the wide range this blend can cover from moist to crispy-dry...and then find your own sweet spot thereafter....Read More

Bag states, "A classic blend of the highest quality bright and dark fired Virginias." A little research stated its roughly a 50/50 mix of bright and dark fired Va's. Package note of barbeque and peaty vegetation. Tobacco is a shag cut of yellowish light brown, brown and a little dark brown. Moisture content is ok. Most pipe smokers will want to dry this out a bit. Burns moderately fast with a few relights. The strength is medium and nic is mild. No flavoring detected. Taste is medium and mostly consistent, with notes of peaty vegetation, bread, floral, slightly tangy, sweet woody, mild oak smoke, sugar, sweet grass, mildly savory, spices, mildly herbal, mildly bitter, earth, a semi-sweet hay background note, and a peppery retro. Room note is pleasant to tolerable, and aftertaste is great....Read More

“Shag” ‘Til You’ve Had Your Fill—With Kendal Mixed!

An intriguing blend, this is. Shag, like cube cut, isn’t the most commonplace style you see anymore. This shag is almost like thick hair, and in its pouch it smells very much like cigar leaf, while being very moist and seemingly a bit sticky. Haven’t encountered a shag blend before that shared all of those characteristics. The cigar-leaf pouch note quickly gives way to that old Kendal flavor featured in varied forms in Samuel Gawith’s Brown Number Four (one of my all-time favorites and as hard as hen’s teeth to find) and in a few other SG blends like 1792 Flake and Sam’s Flake. Like most Gawith Hoggarth and Samuel Gawith blends, Kendal Mixed is both quite moist upon first opening, and when lit, possesses no bite but sends a mild burn through the nasal passages. One reviewer is right in that the tongue feels quite dry after a bowl. The flavor is smoky and nutty courtesy of the burley and slightly sweet from the Virginias. Much of this burns down to a fine white ashen dust, perhaps a testament to its purity. The main question I have with this blend regards its strength. Is it as nic-heavy as many reviewers hold? Smokingpipes has it more as a medium-strength blend, with Gawith Hoggarth’s and SG’s rope/twist blends being significantly stronger in Vitamin N. I’ll leave it for my fellow pipers to judge. I’d put it at medium-strong, maybe adding one more yellow dot to its current three.

Or perhaps I’m just losing my edge! Regardless—I thoroughly enjoy this blend. Do try! 5.0 stars.

A nice bold Va/Bur mix. Smokes cool, no bite smooth as silk and quite strong. Has a pleasant room note to boot.
Too strong for me

Gets 3 stars cause its good quality tobacco but its got too much of a cigar taste and an overwhelming hit to the back of the throat, it burns the nostrils and dries the mouth. This stuff will get my tongue feeling like leather in no time. But aside from all the negatives it can be used in small doses to give a weak blend some umph. This would blend in nicely with Kendal Gold shag, but I'd use it so sparingly the 1oz I got would last ages. Plus I think kendal gold is just fine as it is so I don't know if I'd even bother. This isn't a negaive review, just a no-for-me review. Final notes. So far I have only had one other tobacco that was stronger and that was "Brown Bogie" uncut rope tobacco also by Hoggarth. You can really feel like a puritan smoking this stuff and you're a better man/woman than me if you can handle it....Read More
Strong Hit

Product: Gawith Hoggarth & Co. Kendal Mixed Bulk
It tastes good, a bit strong for me ( I like mild flavors) But the nicotine hit had me head-spinning ! 40 plus years a smoker, and I have not had that since I smoked French tobacco way back. Quite an aftertaste too, sweet and salty at once.
