Product: Samuel Gawith Best Brown Flake 50g
My daughter took the tin from my hand and took a whiff and said "it smells like tamarind". That's it! I was trying to find a way to articulate the great tin note, which happens to translate into taste as well. Tangy dried fruit with a lasti... Read More

一款有着独特豆香的淡甜V草
March 17, 2021
Product: Samuel Gawith Best Brown Flake 50g

Delicious and Light Flake

Product: Samuel Gawith Best Brown Flake 50g
BBF has a subtle charm that sets it apart from the many Virginia flakes out there. It is a broken flake, pale brown in color, somewhat mild in flavor, and easy on the nicotine. It's reminiscent of Capstan Blue Flake in many ways, but with the usual j... Read More
e ne sais quoi that Samuel Gawith often has. BBF has a fairly subtle but distinct brown sugar flavor that's just delicious—which is perhaps where the name came from—as well as the typical bright Virginia notes of grassy-hay and mild citrus. Although the tin note gave me a faint whiff reminiscent of Grasmere Flake, there are no flowery Lakeland flavorings in BBF—none whatsoever. There's almost no potential for tongue bite, if any. However, smoke it slow all the same, because its delicious flavor can be ruined from puffing it too hard and/or burning it too hot. Room note is pleasant for pipers, but isn't anything special for non-smokers; those in my house say it smells better than cigarettes but not great. Its mild and flavorful characteristics make it a perfect first smoke of the day. Just like all SG products, this is a moist flake—very moist. You will never enjoy smoking this great tobacco unless you dry it out quite a bit before you smoke it. I recommend leaving it out overnight, or a microwave oven for just a few seconds. Read Less

Not Sammy’s Best Brown Flake, But It Still Scores Five Stars

Product: Samuel Gawith Best Brown Flake 50g
In all of Samuel Gawith’s body of work, Best Brown Flake (with its braggadocio-rich name) might play second fiddle to the magnificent Full Virginia Flake. But in my world, it still clocks in at a full five stars. And if not, at least four-point-five.... Read More
And not because of the fact I’m an Anglophile who loves Samuel Gawith’s blends. With Best Brown Flake, Samuel Gawith delivers an excellent medium-bodied Virginia broken flake. I might be wrong, but the brown sugar, honey, citrus and grassy hay notes all seem to result naturally from inside of the prime Virginia leaf here, and not from any mystery toppings.
The tin note is to me very much like green tea, with Full Virginia Flake smelling like green tea mixed with some unknown other tea variety. Green tea is not as present, however in the flavor post-char light. Instead you get the flavors I mentioned before.
This easily could become an all-day, with its mild nicotine levels and mild flavor, but it is at least an ideal morning puff for a pipester with Virginia on the mind. Rub this out and dry for a couple or few hours before packing the bowl, for best results. 5.0 stars. Read Less
Flavorful Virginia

Product: Samuel Gawith Best Brown Flake 50g

Product: Samuel Gawith Best Brown Flake 250g
This blend has a terrific taste, if you possess the self-control to only sip it. If you're a heavy puffer, which I typically practice, you might want to seek another Virginia. Heavy puffers will endure a bite like a Nile crocodile with this blend.

I've got to say that the aged Virginia's really hit the spot for me. I prefer this over the Samuel Gawith FVF and 1792. My tin was perfect. Didn't need to dry it out, smoked great, and no bite. This is one of my top five favorite Virginians.

sh Breakfast Tea before resuming. This is a slow burning tobacco and one deep bowlful lasts for at least forty-five minutes to an hour & strangely enough, doesn't leave a very strong tobacco odor in the room. That tells me there's very little Vitamin N in the mix... a rather wimpy concoction.
Unfortunately, I like so many other types/blends of tobaccos & will be setting this one aside and doubtful I'll ever revisit it. It was a gift from a friend & thought I'd give it a go. However, I love Samuel Gawith's FVF, especially after a few years of age... one of my all time favorites but there's nothing better on the planet than C & D's Small Batch, Carolina Red Flake which is the best tasting & strongest VA I've ever smoked. I found BBF to be lacking in strength with little flavor. However, we're all of differing DNA with varying taste receptors & many prefer milder blends. I just couldn't get past the harsh, biting nature of Best Brown Flake. I'm glad many find this exceptional but it will not remain in my rotation. Read Less

st way to prep? Fold and stuff cube cut? Full rub? I found that a full rub and an hour really work. Flavor. Absolutely brilliant when found. Cinnamon spice and mellow mustiness that is inherent in brown virginias. Leaves no dottor and burns all the way down. I really do enjoy this flake when done properly. I have a special love affair with these old fashioned English made flakes. I dont complain when any go out of stock for months cause I know that they will not sacrifice quality for production. And prepping and drying is part of the ritual for finding that sweet spot of a smoke that's truly sublime. Read Less

BEST BROWN FLAKE is a pure Virginia. Regarding the taste of this mixture, well, it’s not my pair of shoes. I was expecting a broad fan of all kinds of Virginia flavours. inutes, rubbed it out, dried it some more. A guy can tell when the moisture level is a tad high and as such it did require some attention throughout the bowl. Smoked in a new cob, I found Best Brown to be a mellow, full-bodied (yet not overpowering) complex smoke. It really did make me wonder at the fact that Orlik is over two bucks cheaper but yet I find myself reaching for the red tin very, very often. I will also plan to reevaluate this flake after some aging and some more drying. For now, I'm a fan and I do think it'll be a four-star rating upon further review... Read Less
