About This Pipe
Boasting over 50 years of experience, Tom Eltang is one of the most prolific artisans within the Danish pipe-making school. While he's created some fascinating Freehands, Eltang's more minimalist pieces are just as revered. No matter what shape he's turning, Eltang always prioritizes proportion, harmony, and balance above all, and there is perhaps no better example of that exacting approach than this "M"-graded asymmetric Horn.
Eltang's "M" grade is short for "Masterpiece," and without exaggeration, I can confirm that's exactly what this offering is. Incredible grain abounds throughout this piece, with dense, flawless birdseye and tight, clean cross grain effortlessly coalescing with the stummel's shaping, which is beautifully organic in its asymmetry. The bowl is prominently lenticular in cross-section, its shape informed by crisp yet flowing ridgelines that careen gracefully from the stem's bit to the edge of the bowl's rim. Said rim is precisely chamfered, making it easy to load one's tobacco of choice into the sizable chamber, which measures nearly two inches deep. Dressed in a vivid contrast stain and a smooth, lustrous finish, this piece showcases the very best in terms of both grain and shaping, making it a venerable prospective addition to any pipe collection. Moreover, being a rare shape from Eltang — and an "M"-graded one at that — it's sure to excite fans and collectors of his work.
