About This Pipe

While Rolando Negoita originally hailed from Transylvania, he moved to the United States after completing his studies at the Romanian Academy of Fine Arts in Bucharest. Sadly, he passed away in 2021, but he left behind an extensive portfolio of unique and highly creative designs. He was an artisan interested in pushing the boundaries of pipe making, and he drew inspiration from a broad range of influences, including the natural world, the art of ancient Greece, and even Bauhaus architecture.

From stem to rim, this Pickaxe of Negoita's making exudes unique style and demonstrates the late artisan's mastery over briar as a medium. The bowl features an exceptionally pointy heel, from which the walls rise with a subtle outward bulge toward a flaring, chamfered rim that almost appears to have a thin lip around the edges. Said rim also tilts upward at the aft, imbuing the composition with a strong sense of implied motion, which is only furthered by the silhouette of the sweeping, near-vertical shank-and-stem arrangement. The shank curves out dramatically from the transition, and it's joined by a deeply bent, half-saddle stem whose single shoulder rests high above the base, and has a more abstract, gestural appearance than most. A band of silver adorns the junction of this pipe, and a single, crisp beadline adorns said band for one more flourish of fine linework. Gorgeous grain abounds throughout the stummel, and it's accentuated by a warm, smooth finish that makes a particularly handsome backdrop for the silver band.
