About This Pipe
After becoming fascinated with pipes, Dublin native Austin Quinlan began acquiring and restoring estate pieces, expanding his collection while learning the tooling and engineering behind pipe making. Over time, Quinlan developed a distinctive style rooted in the Anglo-French tradition, creating muscular compositions with tight-knit frames. This style lends itself well to a Peterson tribute, which is what we have here with this "Kaffir" Horn. A direct homage to the archival Peterson shape of the same name, it demonstrates Quinlan's appreciation for classic, timeless silhouettes rendered in compact, muscular proportions.
In addition to the clean, seamless shaping, the presentation of the grain here is truly impressive. Quinlan has read the briar with deceptive effortlessness; the confluence of birdseye and cross grain with the stummel's flowing, steady curves is highly pleasing to the eye. Dressed in a rich chestnut smooth finish and paired to a jet-black stem of vulcanite, this pipe's color palette is every bit as elegant as its shaping. Although this is a rather classic silhouette, it's actually quite a standout within Quinlan's portfolio, making this a must-have for any fan of his work.
