About This Pipe
With a background in woodworking and a sharp eye for detail, Trey Rice creates striking pipes that blend American, Danish, and English shaping traditions into something uniquely his own. An architect by profession and a skilled pipe artisan, Rice crafts his pipes from his workshop just outside Fort Worth, Texas. His designs often draw from the classic forms of English and Danish pipes, but his architectural precision and sense of proportion give each piece a clean, refined aesthetic. His work is grounded in shape-chart classics and artisan staples, with a focus on fine accent work and meticulous shaping.
Those shaping cues are readily apparent in this Pot, a well-proportioned piece that nods to the classic Anglo-French profile while incorporating touches of Danish influence. The bowl is stout and muscular, featuring a gentle taper along its walls, a characteristic often associated with Danish pipe design. A low-set shank accentuates the fullness of the bowl's lower half, while its robust, rounded form flows seamlessly into the base of the vulcanite saddle stem. The stummel is dressed in a rugged sandblast that reveals stacked growth rings across the upper bowl, while the underside showcases a handsome display of birdseye. Adding a touch of contrast to the otherwise traditional palette, the shank end is accented with a pale band of mammoth, and the smooth rim provides an appealing textural counterpoint to the sandblasted finish.
