About This Pipe

David Huber is an American artisan pipe maker whose work blends innovation with reverence for tradition. What began over a decade ago as a hobby shaping briar at home has since evolved into a full-time career. Huber has developed a style marked by meticulous attention to detail, innovation, and deep respect for tradition, and primarily focuses on curvaceous, gestural Freehands, though he occasionally incorporates traditional shapes.

This Volcano by David Huber is an alluring take on the shape, rendered with a Fish-like shank that complements the overall design's geometric nature. Starting with the bowl, it retains the shape's characteristic ridgeline just above the heel, though Huber has crafted it with a skewed sense of line that immediately establishes the piece's organic sense of motion. That motion continues along the shank, which arches gently to one side as it extends out the back of the profile, creating the perfect place to drape a digit. This fluidity is present throughout the design, all while the profile remains squat and compact — a considerable feat of craftsmanship, given the amount of geometric detail incorporated into such a compact form. The stummel is finished in a dark sandblast, highlighting stacked growth rings along the flanks of the bowl and clusters of birdseye across the ridgeline-wrapped heel. For a touch of contrast, the rim is finished smooth and stained a lighter hue.
