About This Pipe

With a foundation in woodworking and a longstanding appreciation for pipe smoking, Dirk Heinemann's path to pipe making was a natural progression. He studied product design for five years at the University of Hannover, completed a three-year carpentry apprenticeship, and worked professionally as a furniture designer — experiences that collectively informed his measured, design-forward approach to pipe making. Heinemann's work balances thoughtful experimentation with a steadfast commitment to elegance and functionality.

A signature shape from the German artisan, the Tuban is defined by its cylindrical form and flowing, Horn-like gesture, and this example speaks clearly to Heinemann's refined, minimalist sensibility. Just over four inches in length, it is notably compact and light, offering both visual distinction and everyday practicality. The shank incorporates reverse Calabash engineering, with an internal chamber that captures excess moisture to promote a cooler, drier smoke. Unlike the tapering Horn, this Tuban maintains a consistent diameter from rim to shank end, the latter finished with a band of spalted platan and joined to a concise saddle stem of jet-black vulcanite. A warm, ruddy sandblast dresses the stummel, unveiling rippling horizontal growth rings along both flanks.
