Dunhill's "24" Four Square is a structural design that places emphasis on geometrical shaping and crisp line work. While the shape can vary wildly across the marque's various group sizes, this Group 6-sized rendition is stocky and muscular. The tall bowl is framed by four facets and their accompanying ridgelines, a visual motif that continues across the boxy shank and tapered stem. The flat underside of the stummel allows the pipe to sit sturdily without the aid of stand, making it ideal for those seeking a handsome desk pipe. It's presented in the shadowy Shell Briar sandblast, which coaxes out fine stacks of growth rings across the surface of the bowl.
The Shell Briar's addition to the Dunhill catalog was a pivotal moment in pipe-smoking history. Before 1917, pipes with sandblasted finishes had never been made, and Alfred Dunhill's innovative mind created arguably the most popular finish for pipes today when he unveiled the Shell Briar.
