Formerly known as the American Pipe Making Exposition, our annual Global Pipe Making Exposition features contributions from some of the world's foremost artisans, all united around a central theme. One of the most exciting events of the year for carvers, smokers, and enthusiasts of briar alike, the Global Exposition acts not only as a showcase for the immense talent of these artisans but as a focus for the boundless creativity that these masters of the art possess. For 2026, the theme of our Expo is "The Art of the Sandblast," celebrating the artistry and craftsmanship behind one of the most meticulous finishing techniques in pipe making. Through the sandblast, these artisans transform the natural grain of briar into textured works of art, highlighting the unique character of each block and demonstrating the artistry of the technique.

German artisan Werner Mummert is one of the participants we are privileged to feature in this year's Expo. Mummert is known for his boundary-pushing approach to pipe making, fusing precise construction with avant-garde design to create pieces that demonstrate a high level of utility as well as beauty. While this Reverse Calabash Poker is a slightly less avant-garde piece than many of the artisan's other offerings, it still showcases his bold, unmistakable style as well as his exceptional talent in the blasting cabinet.

The tall, perfectly cylindrical bowl of this Poker makes an excellent vehicle for the briar's undulating waves of ring grain, which have been drawn out with impressive visual clarity and endlessly satisfying tactile detail thanks to Werner's signature sandblasting technique and a warm, dimensional stain. Equally impressive, the shank features Reverse Calabash engineering, and is fashioned from crystal-clear glass that allows one to observe the smoke as it travels to the palate, bridging the gap between practicality and novelty. Both industrial and organic in design, and equal parts reliable desk pipe and functional art, this is an excellent work from Mummert, and an exceptionally fitting entry for this year's Expo.
