About This Pipe
Craftsmanship is the name of the game for German artisan Werner Mummert, particularly when it comes to his deep, craggy sandblasts and fascinating sculptural designs. This Cavalier is a great example of the latter, perhaps the best one that Mummert could possibly deliver given its ingenuity and originality.
Mummert did create a Cavalier here, but on his terms. The shank and bowl are made to appear as black, red, and golden brown Lego bricks (possibly a nod to the tricolor flag of Germany, from which Mummert hails), complete with Lego's signature circular studs ringing the square bowl. Mummert even screwed a Lego wheel, tire and all, into the bottom of the shank's back for a small dash of verisimilitude. In keeping with classic Calabash engineering, the tire is removable, allowing the airway to be drained for easier cleaning and maintenance. The "bricks" are lightly sandblasted and, naturally, have sharp ridgelines on all sides. Mummert even managed to work some mathematics into this piece, building the bowl five "bricks" high with a two-"brick" interchange between the bowl and the 10-"brick"-high shank, which stands upward in an orientation parallel to the bowl. The stem is saddle-style vulcanite, square at the bottom to match the top of the shank and ending in a flat, wide bit. It's as literally playful as a pipe can get, a courteous nod to possibly the most legendary toy to come out of the legendary pipe making nation of Denmark, and a great addition to any collection of distinctively shaped pipes.
