About This Pipe
German artisan Werner Mummert is well known for his boundary pushing approach to pipe making, fusing precise construction with avant-garde design to create pieces that demonstrate a high level of utility as well as beauty. While many of his pipes hew closely to the avant-garde side of the spectrum, this bent Billiard is a slightly more reserved offering from Mummert, all things considered, yet it still retains his unmistakable flair.
This bent Billiard pairs a tall, subtly tapered bowl to a rather muscular, curved shank and a fetching saddle stem. The stem's bit is slightly downturned and, together with the length and curvature of the shank, it promotes a relaxed smoking posture in hand. Speaking of this offering's in-hand presence, the stummel offers endless tactile appeal thanks to Mummert's signature sandblast, which reveals the briar's tight stacks of ring grain in exceptionally vivid detail for both the eyes and the fingers to appreciate. These undulating waves of grain are echoed by the ripples within the band of Fordite that adorns the shoulders of the saddle stem. Fordite, a unique, upcycled material with origins in the automotive industry, makes for an eye-catching accent every time, so it's no surprise to find it on one of Mummert's striking pieces.
