About This Pipe
German pipe maker Werner Mummert boasts a vast portfolio encompassing everything from classic shapes to architectural, avant-garde pieces. This sandblasted Cue Ball showcases Mummert's boundary-pushing side, with its whimsically spherical, namesake bowl and playful, inventive shank-and-stem arrangement.
There's a strong sense of visual rhythm to this piece, and a pleasing one at that, thanks to the cue ball motif that persists throughout the composition. Starting at the fore, the bowl has been rendered into a cue ball-like sphere, and is preceded by two more spheres that have been painted to resemble billiard balls: the first one a solid red with the number 7, and the second one a solid orange with the number 5. The stylized shoulders of the stem also verge on spherical, establishing a pleasing cascade of forms that decrease gradually in size as they repeat the same shaping motif. The fiery red and orange hues of the "billiard balls" stand out strikingly against the stummel's dark, smoky sandblast, which reveals the briar's grain in soft yet appreciable detail. A signature design of Mummert's, this Cue Ball is a must-have for fans of his work — especially the bolder side of it.
