About This Pipe
With over six decades of experience under his belt, Danish pipe maker Hans "Former" Nielsen has dedicated most of his life to mastering his craft, cultivating a style that is distinctly his own. He entered the world of pipe making at just 15, starting out in Poul Rasmussen's workshop and quickly honing his eye for detail and fine craftsmanship. Later, he worked as a supervisor for the W.Ø. Larsen workshop before eventually establishing his own. Rendered in "oversized" proportions, this sleek bent Bulldog still maintains the clean sense of line and thoughtful, balanced shaping for which the artisan is known.
In a word, I would define this Bulldog as "crisp." Sleek ridgelines frame the diamond shank, while the bowl boasts an exceptionally defined, pointed heel and an equally well-defined pair of ridgelines that demarcate its high-set waist. The visual distinction of said waist is further strengthened by the stummel's dual finish, which coats everything above the bowl's waist in a smooth, glossy, ebony stain, and everything below the waist in a concise, smoky sandblast of a similar hue. The traditional jet-black stem keeps the pipe's color palette cohesive and understated, and its rectangular shoulders extend the shank's length, offering ample room to comfortably drape a digit. The sizable bowl houses a chamber nearly two inches deep, affording plenty of space for a favorite tobacco blend. If you're a fan of Former's work, and of long-smoking offerings, this finely made Bulldog is certainly a must-have for your collection.
