About This Pipe

As one of Denmark's most revered artisans, Former's legacy is rooted in tradition yet shaped by a continuous pursuit of perfection. Beginning his career at just 15, Nielsen honed his skills under Poul Rasmussen before moving into a supervisory role at the iconic W.Ø. Larsen workshop, where he helped guide and mentor legendary figures like Teddy Knudsen, Tonni Nielsen, and Jess Chonowitsch. After a decade at Larsen, he struck out on his own, forging a reputation for excellence that has since influenced generations of craftsmen around the globe.

Displaying Former's deft sense of line and ability to coax the best of the grain from a block of briar, this Acorn showcases his mastery of the shape. Former has crafted the shape numerous times, with each rendition being a touch different from the rest. This particular example features a tall bowl at the fore of a rather slender shank-and-stem combination. The bowl immediately captures the eye with its over two inches of height, filling the eye with beautiful straight grain along the bowl's flanks. The shaping takes a distinctly Danish approach to the form, with a pointed heel and softly domed rim that lend the bowl an elegant profile. The shank is low-set to the bowl, accentuating the bowl's height as it rises to a slender half-saddle stem that curves comfortably toward the bit. Altogether, the graceful lines and carefully balanced proportions give the piece a refined, distinctly Danish character while allowing the briar's grain to take center stage.
