Rusticated Long Shanked Tomato with Horn Tobacco Pipe

Elongating a pipe's shank is an oft-seen motif within Danish pipe making in particular, and it's seen throughout the portfolio's of artisan Danish carvers, especially employed by Lars Ivarsson. Peter Heding has rendered the aesthetic several times over the years, and here he presents the lengthy form with a forward-urging Tomato bowl. The slightly bent stem and slowly curling shank gain speed and visual momentum before being fully realized in the bowl's dynamic posture, marked by a lifted heel that pushes it forward. While the stretched form adds sleekness to the profile, Heding has lent some muscularity to the shank, matching the bowl's squat, plump disposition. It caters to other Danish design cues as well — the sandblast being dark and light in depth, contrasted by the brighter, smooth-polished stain of rim. Furthermore, the shank end terminates in a mount of horn, subtly flared to echo the expansion ring at the stem base. It's a simultaneously sleek and substantial pipe, the curves beautifully balanced and supple in hand.
