About This Pipe

Among much of his portfolio, Jared Coles' style shows a propensity for fluid, gestural pieces inspired by Danish and Japanese design, complete with the compact muscularity of American pipe making. This Billiard, however, showcases the carver's traditional side, though it still evokes his distinctive aesthetic with its clean line work and compact form factor. Measuring just over four and a half inches in length, this piece possesses a healthy amount of substance about its build, all while retaining a lightweight presence well-suited for portability and comfortable clenching. The composition sees a pert bowl posed at the fore with a gentle forward cant, its walls rising from the firm heel straight to the softly rounded rim. Out back, the bowl pairs to an arrow-straight shank and sleek cumberland saddle stem, the latter of which accentuates this piece's trim profile. Coles' Weathered finish dresses the stummel in a distinctive rustication, carved with a series of pronounced ridges and fine striations akin to the rugged texture of a weathered rock face, its rich, chocolate-hued stain complemented handsomely by the stem's variegated tones, with the rim left smooth for contrast.
