About This Pipe

Though Jared Coles' shaping style draws from design schools across the world, his work is primarily rooted in the American Renaissance and Danish classical movements of pipe making, so it's no surprise that he presents pieces such as this Nefertiti. Named in honor of the wife of Akhenaten and one of the queens of the 18th Dynasty of Ancient Egypt, the Nefertiti shape is essentially a subtly modified Dublin, and it was originally carved by Sixten Ivarsson: its outline immediately reminiscent of the famous bust of Nefertiti discovered in 1912 by Ludwig Borchardt. A rounded heel supports this pipe's bowl as its walls flare understatedly toward the rim, one which here slants forward dynamically, altering the usually more straightforward outline in favor of one that immediately draws the eye to the fore. This slant works in tandem with a more angular transition and a lifting shank to further emphasize the presence of the bowl, with the implied lines of the shank leading to the heel as it descends and creates a subtle kind of spur. A robust accent of horn denotes the junction to a sleek, black vulcanite saddle stem, the two pairing at an inlaid band of brass. Dressed in Cole's Weathered finish, this pipe is rich with texture, its rusticated surfaces showcasing a warm auburn stain that nicely complements the horn accent.
