About This Pipe
California-based artisan Jared Coles grew up around his pipe-smoking grandfather. Fondly remembering their time together, he decided to take up the hobby of smoking himself when he turned 18. It wouldn't be until several years later, during his studies at UC Irvine, that he would discover the world of artisan pipes. Mesmerized, he decided to try his hand at crafting pipes himself, and since then he has grown to be an accomplished artisan in his own right. Coles draws inspiration from a variety of pipe-making styles from all over the world, resulting in an eclectic style that's still uniquely his own.
This Elephant's Foot points to the artisan's Danish influences in particular, as the shape was pioneered by the Danish-style carver, Bo Nordh. The Elephant's Foot is generally defined by a pair of wrapping ridgelines that frame the flanks, rim, and heel of the bowl, which is certainly true of this iteration by Coles. Measuring a little over five and a half inches in total length, it's a rather compact piece, but still retains plenty of striking detail in both form and finish. Regarding finish, the stummel wears a deep, craggy sandblast that emphasizes the briar's beautiful, complex grain patterns and offers a stimulating in-hand presence. With such a distinctive silhouette and rich texture, this pipe is sure to make an indispensable addition to any smoker's collection.
