About This Pipe
Originally from Jacksonville, Florida, Micah Redmond's artistic inclinations led him to explore pipe making as a creative outlet, eventually transforming a hobby into a serious craft. Now an established artisan, Redmond's style is characterized by supple curves and hearty proportions. Yet, his designs often remain compressed, reminiscent of the compact musculature often seen in American pipe making.
While this particular Tomato departs from Redmond's typically compact compositions, it is a shape with which he is well acquainted. This rendition is particularly eye-catching and contemporary. The bowl remains as squat and bulbous as many of his other interpretations, imbued with a strong sense of forward momentum achieved through a wide transition and softly lifted heel. One of the most striking elements of the piece is the shank: a round, elongated form extended by a long section of boxwood. The accent's lighter tones contrast beautifully with the briar while displaying attractive grain of its own. A light blue acrylic stem further reinforces the modern aesthetic, adding a subtle pop of color to the otherwise warm, organic palette. The stummel is finished in a light sandblast that highlights rippling growth rings along the bowl's flanks, all left unstained. Altogether, this is a striking interpretation of the Tomato shape, elevated by a bold accent that is sure to stand out on any pipe rack.
