About This Pipe
Larry Roush's pipe making career was born from his love for pipe smoking. Even before he took up the craft, Roush leveraged his background as a jeweler and silversmith to make accents for the pipes in his rotation. He eventually began making pipes entirely by hand, receiving instruction early on from American artisan Mike Butera. Roush's work is typically marked by his ornate silverwork, hand-cut vulcanite stems, and extra-craggy sandblasts, all of which are present on this Acorn.
A dramatic interpretation of the classic form, this piece boasts a towering bowl that flares from its firm, protruding heel to its broad rim. Said rim is sloped higher on the aft than the fore, a design cue that immediately draws attention to the rear of the composition, where the shank-and-stem arrangement curls in an almost Hawkbill-like gesture, The shank and stem's curvaceous build mirrors the undulation of the rim and provides a touch of dynamism to the shape's silhouette, all while promoting a comfortable smoking posture from which to enjoy the bowl's healthy chamber capacity. This being a Roush pipe, the finish here is, of course, gorgeous, the crisp sandblast drawing out radiating waves of growth rings that follow the bowl's upward flare. A gleaming band of Roush's signature rope-finished silver adorns the junction and ties the entire composition together with a dose of flash.
