About This Pipe
Li Zhesong is a Suzhou-based artisan whose path to pipe making began with a hobby of restoring estate pipes that turned into a full-time occupation. Influenced early on by his father's woodworking skills, and trained in architecture and urban planning, Li brings the discipline of his past careers to the shaping of briar. Working with carefully sourced materials, he now produces fewer than 80 pipes annually, emphasizing meticulous attention to detail over volume.
This Billiard is a fine example of Li's precise approach, with clean lines and a carefully considered transition from bowl to stem. The bowl tapers gently upward from a rounded heel, giving the front of the composition a pleasing sense of heft. A low-set shank extends from the bowl, gradually tapering as it meets a bamboo extension. From there, the knuckles gradually flare toward the stem, lending the transition an organic quality while maintaining the pipe's measured lines. The saddle stem continues this rhythm, with its base shaped to echo the contours of the bamboo before flowing into the vulcanite stem. A crisp sandblast brings the briar to life, revealing tightly stacked growth rings along the flanks of the bowl. It's a thoughtful composition that showcases Li's eye for proportion and his ability to balance organic details with precise shaping.
