About This Pipe

Wang Tieyuan, known in the pipe world as Madao3000, began making pipes in 2021 after taking up pipe smoking himself. At the time, he was working as a network engineer, but what started as a way to unwind quickly became a passion. Entirely self-taught, he learned through experimentation, documenting his progress online and drawing advice and encouragement from pipe makers around the world before leaving engineering in 2025 to pursue pipe making full-time. Though he first focused on mastering classic shapes, Madao3000 always intended to make Freehand pipes, and his work today is defined by variety rather than a single signature style. His engineering background continues to influence his approach, with an emphasis on creating pipes that are as effortless to smoke as they are enjoyable to look at.

This Acorn is one of the more elongated forms in the Chinese carver's portfolio, with a profile that gives the shape a graceful sense of length. The bowl is defined by a pointed heel and a pronounced forward cant, establishing a flowing sense of movement that carries through the rest of the design. Its namesake influence is readily apparent in the bowl's wrapping ridgeline, which traces an organic path around the inflated rim. The rim itself is asymmetrical, with a little extra substance along the fore side of the bowl that adds to the shape's flowing character. The shank accounts for much of the pipe's overall length, gradually flaring as it approaches a warm boxwood accent at the junction. The stummel is dressed in a crisp sandblast, revealing particularly striking grain, with well-defined tendrils of flame grain stretching across the bowl and patches of birdseye peeking through along the rim.
