About This Pipe
Wang Tieyuan, known in the pipe world as Madao3000, began making pipes in 2021 after taking up pipe smoking himself. At the time, he was working as a network engineer, but what started as a way to unwind quickly became a passion. Entirely self-taught, he learned through experimentation, documenting his progress online and drawing advice and encouragement from pipe makers around the world before leaving engineering in 2025 to pursue pipe making full-time. Though he first focused on mastering classic shapes, Madao3000 always intended to make Freehand pipes, and his work today is defined by variety rather than a single signature style. His engineering background continues to influence his approach, with an emphasis on creating pipes that are as effortless to smoke as they are enjoyable to look at.
This bent Egg is a handsome example of Tieyuan's work, while introducing a distinctly Danish influence. The tall, well-canted bowl features a soft, singular ridgeline running down one side, adding definition without disrupting the form's rounded contours. This subtle line carries through to one side of the shank while the other stays rounded, echoing a motif commonly found in Danish pipe making. The shank flares gently at the junction, meeting a tan vulcanite stem across a broad face. Overall, it is a handsome example of Tieyuan's work, combining the muscular character that often defines his pipes with a soft Danish sensibility.
