Madao3000 Pipes

Wang Tieyuan, known in the pipe world as Madao3000, came to pipe making by way of a career in network engineering. After taking up pipe smoking himself, he began experimenting with carving in 2021, initially searching for a relaxing, hands-on hobby. What started as a pastime quickly evolved into something much more. Drawn to the complete concentration pipe making demands, he found the craft to be almost meditative, allowing him to clear his mind while working. By August 2025, he had left engineering behind to devote himself to pipe making full-time.

Largely self-taught, Madao3000 learned through experimentation, purchasing tools and machinery and refining his techniques through countless hours of trial and error. Along the way, he documented his progress online, openly sharing both successes and setbacks while benefiting from the encouragement and advice of pipe makers and collectors around the world. Though he never formally apprenticed under a single artisan, his engineering background proved invaluable, giving him a methodical approach to both design and manufacturing. That analytical mindset continues to shape his work today, particularly in his emphasis on engineering pipes that smoke effortlessly, allowing the smoker to focus on the tobacco rather than managing the pipe itself.

While he dedicated himself to mastering classic forms early on, Madao3000 always envisioned creating Freehand pipes. Today, his work is defined by variety, with each piece designed to have its own distinct personality rather than conforming to a single style. He cites the late Japanese artisan Hiroyuki Tokutomi as his greatest influence, admiring the way Tokutomi's imaginative freehand designs continually redefined what a pipe could be. Beyond pipe making, he finds inspiration in the unpredictability of nature, from driving through heavy rain and dense fog to watching thunderstorms roll across the landscape, hoping to capture that same sense of individuality and spontaneity in his work.

Away from the workbench, Madao3000 enjoys exploring unfamiliar places by car, finding that each new destination reminds him of the world's vastness and inspires him to keep discovering new experiences. An avid pipe smoker himself, he favors Virginia blends, particularly Orlik and Samuel Gawith's Full Virginia Flake. His pipes are fashioned from Italian and Algerian briar with German ebonite stems, each stamped "Madao 3000."
