Smooth Bent Egg with Boxwood Tobacco Pipe

Wang Tieyuan, known in the pipe world as Madao3000, began making pipes in 2021 after taking up pipe smoking himself. At the time, he was working as a network engineer, but what started as a way to unwind quickly became a passion. Entirely self-taught, he learned through experimentation, documenting his progress online and drawing advice and encouragement from pipe makers around the world before leaving engineering in 2025 to pursue pipe making full-time. Though he first focused on mastering classic shapes, Madao3000 always intended to make Freehand pipes, and his work today is defined by variety rather than a single signature style. His engineering background continues to influence his approach, with an emphasis on creating pipes that are as effortless to smoke as they are enjoyable to look at.

Among the first batch of Madao3000 pipes featured on our site, this bent Egg is an exceptional example of his craftsmanship. While his work is characterized by meticulous attention to detail and an ever-expanding range of designs, this piece sits on the more compact end of Wang's growing portfolio. Its proportions are neat and refined, nestling comfortably in the hand while remaining surprisingly lightweight. The bowl is shaped with a dramatic forward cant that opens the transition, creating a natural resting place for the thumb or forefinger and resulting in an especially satisfying in-hand feel. That forward momentum continues through the rest of the composition, flowing into an elegant upward arc that lends the pipe a sense of poise. The shank carries forward the profile's muscular character, its rounded contours continuing seamlessly into the saddle stem, where Wang has softened the shoulders into a graceful dome that complements the overall form.

The pipe is finished in a rich, high-gloss smooth stain that beautifully showcases the briar. Dense clusters of birdseye decorate the underside, while the bowl's flanks feature striking, well-defined straight grain that immediately draws the eye. Completing the composition is a boxwood accent at the shank face, its warm, honeyed tones providing an elegant contrast to the finish.
