About This Pipe

Wang Tieyuan, the artisan behind Madao3000 pipes, finds endless inspiration in nature. "Nature is never repetitive," he says, and he hopes the same can be said for the pipes he creates. Wang strives to imbue every single one of his smoking instruments with its own unique personality — a goal he has certainly achieved with this stunning Fugu.

It's safe to say that this Fugu is unlike any of Wang's other pipes, but it's also a thoroughly unique take on the Fugu altogether. The form is incredibly tightly coiled, yet within its compact dimensions, it showcases a breathtaking variety of dynamic ridgelines and well-defined grain. On the left side, the ridgeline that curves through the transition all but disappears in profile, allowing the bowl and shank to almost appear as one, showcasing a nearly uninterrupted display of birdseye. Said birdseye is some of the most beautiful I've ever seen, and more can be found on the opposite flank, while tight tracks of cross grain wrap around the top and underside of the stummel. The juxtaposition of swirling birdseye against the linear, almost stripy looking cross grain is truly something to behold, and this contrast is made all the more striking by a rich auburn stain. A high-kicking stem of vulcanite tops off the composition; its single expansion ring near the base makes for the perfect final flourish to this piece's stunning silhouette.
