Better known by his pseudonym, Madao3000, artisan Wang Tieyuan hails from Beijing and formerly worked as an engineer before he left the industry to pursue pipe making full-time in 2025. His inspirations include Scandinavian pipe makers, Hiroyuki Tokutomi, and fine art — especially Chinese classics.

If you tried to nail down a shape-chart designation for this Freehand from Madao3000, Egg would likely be the closest candidate given the bowl's rounded, tapered orientation. The close, shallow waves of sandblast combine with the dark stain to give this piece a stimulating touch in addition to its mesmerizing appearance to the eye, courtesy of the ring grain and flame grain stretching from heel to rim on the bowl. The conical shank bends upward and flares generously outward on its way to the curved face, which holds a saddle stem of speckled gray vulcanite that bends minutely on its way to the bit.
