About This Pipe
Like a great many American carvers, Micah Redmond favors compact shapes that are equal parts muscular and curvaceous. Such is the case with this Blowfish rendition, a design that, despite its abbreviated length, boasts a wealth of in-hand substance and a consistent undercurve. Like many iterations of the Blowfish, this piece boasts a unique asymmetry, most evidently at the bowl, which is bifurcated by two crisp ridgelines. These ridgelines frame either side of the lopsided bowl, emphasizing the shape's bulging flanks and the dense clusters of birdseye found there. A subtly lifted shank follows the bowl and flares outward before joining a demurely curved saddle stem. Said stem boasts an uneven base that continues the incongruent shaping present throughout the composition, ensuring that even the smallest aspect of the form is part of the greater whole, paradoxically fostering a visual unity despite the form's inherent unevenness. Dressing this piece is a rich auburn finish that highlights a wealth of attractive grain throughout the stummel.
