About This Pipe
Savinelli's Autograph series features limited-production, handmade pipes from the Italian marque, with stummels of specially aged briar that are turned by the workshop's three most experienced carvers. This series allows the artisans to deviate from the marque's typical shape chart, resulting in striking, one-of-a-kind interpretations of classic shapes, with this Pickaxe Churchwarden being a prime example.
It's not often that we see any sort of Pickaxe iteration in the Autograph series, which makes this distinctive interpretation all the more refreshing. The tall bowl possesses an almost Acorn-like waist but, rather than terminating at a short, softly pointed heel, the walls extend downward quite far, stopping at a much more geometrically shaped — but perhaps equally narrow — heel. Said heel showcases craggy plateau, which adds additional intrigue to the pipe's already striking silhouette. The rest of the stummel wears a dark sandblast, which emphasizes the briar's undulating ring grain in mesmerizing detail. The dark, smoky hue of the sandblast is handsomely contrasted by the milky white of the acrylic stem, which is of full Churchwarden length, making this offering well-suited for laid-back, leisurely smoking sessions.
