About This Pipe
Ryan McCawley fell down the pipe rabbit hole after deciding to restore a pipe he had bought as a teenager, leading to making pipes as a hobby in 2020 and becoming a full-time pipe maker a few years later. His style includes Danish and English influences and he believes his greatest skill as a pipe maker is his mostly self-taught journey, which involved significant trial and error. He credits Sean Reum, Premal Chheda, Paul Lucas, and Jonathan Lavezzo for their advice on acquiring the right tools and enjoys the work of Tom Eltang, Alex Florov, the Ivarssons, Jeff Gracik, and Former, among many others.
This Acorn of Ryan's making is fronted by a wonderfully round, flame grain-adorned bowl that is stained a dark mahogany hue and sandblasted to highlight said flame grain. Birdseye dresses the arc of the rim, and stain and sandblasted reach back to further decorate the lightly flared shank that holds a saddle-style stem of vulcanite. The piece is remarkably light at just under three-quarter of an ounce, and is reliably within Nosewarmer proportions at under four and a half inches in length. Compact but plenty handsome, it's a great work on Ryan's part that is sure to satisfy any smoker in the market for a new pocket pipe or Acorn of any size.
